I would love to watch Simmons and friends uncensored on HBO.

Also, Simmons + Hardknocks and 24/7 crew = awesome. Liev Schrieber narrating 30 for 30's sounds incredible

Did anybody else see the article that somebody wrote about how Bill Simmons should just go the Glenn Beck route? If he converted just 1/10th of his twitter followers to a paid $10 monthly subscription (Beck converted something like 40% so that 10% might not be too unrealistic) he'd bring in $48MM per year.

Even if Bill only converted 1% of his Twitter followers to a paid subscription he'd still bring in $4.8MM per year which is what ESPN was paying him this year.

Selfishly I'd rather him at HBO so I'd have access to him for free, but if I were him I'd hire Beck and Adam Carolla as consultants and try to become mega rich with my own content.

You KNOW that his first rant against ESPN on his own platform would bring in a TON of interest and subscrptions. Imagine him having podcasts with Tom Brady, Jimmy Kimmell, Dan Patrick, etc. etc. to discuss what happened. You would subscribe. NO ONE DENIES THIS!

I talked about this in the long Bill Simmons thread

Basically the rumor is he and Jon Stewart are in talks to create their own internet platform to host their shorts, writings, podcasts etc

it is all about owning your content now and Carolla and Beck set the standard

So couple that with a job at HBO making Docs, features, a show and Simmons could win big by leaving ESPN

Ahh so you think that HBO and his own podcast/website empire may not be mutually exclusive?

In that regard, imagine if HBO ponied up $5MM just for Bill's producer writes and then let him use their platforms to promote his own, separate media empire. Dude could legit pull in $50MM his first full year if he converted his fans to paid subscriptions.

Imagine him unloading on Skipper and Goodell, especially if he's making more than BOTH of them COMBINED

I don't see Simmons making a lot of traction with a 10 buck subscription.

And you may be very disappointed if you're waiting for the "full story" about ESPN. Something tells me that was addressed at some point in some contract.

Podcasting is his future, though but really monetizing that is hard as hell. Carolla is one of the top guys and (per somebody in some other thread quoting him) he grosses about 3 million a year.

But Simmons has a track record of monetizing his fanbase. He has proven himself with two #1 best selling books that were 5 years apart. He's had the #1 sports podcast for what - 6 years running now? Grantland is cited EVERYWHERE and Peter King's rival site is cited nowhere. Bill's more popular and famous/infamous now than when he published either of those books. He's got 10 times the celebrity contacts now than he did 10 years ago. And he has an insanely juicy story to peddle - one he could drag out for years... a little bit of gossip here and a little recollection in a podcast there. He could also have a major media platform (HBO) to leverage for subscriptions to his personal empire.

His fans are legit. He wouldn't convert 40% of his Twitter followers like Glenn Beck did with his crazy fans, but he'd convert somewhere between 5% - 15% in my opinion.

Simmons is about to make bank - he's shown again and again that he outperforms expectations despite his "regular guy" image.

Simmons has two best sellers
The #1 sports podcast on iTunes
A track record of producing award winning docs
And he was an Exec Producer of Million Dollar Arm which made money (cost $25mm/made $38mm)

So he has a lot to offer in a subscription service (especially with Stewart) and to a platform like HBO

Remember you can tier an Internet platform, free content and paid content

There's no 'could' in this statement. Simmons isn't an idiot. He wouldn't have forced his way out unless he saw the potential elsewhere.

I firmly believe he saw the financials in the kind of deals people are mentioning in this thread, and he decided it was in his best interest to poke the bear. People like me and hundreds others love when someone talks shite about ESPN, and he knows it just builds and builds his brand.

Dude is about to make BANK.

I CANNOT wait for his first production post-ESPN. It's gonna be epic. He's gonna go Cersei on those MOFO's.
