Two key points:
By a long shot. The Raiders were right around their absolute worst when Russell was drafted. And you don't take a still not polished quarterback without a real mentor and put him on that team, because....
This. Russell wasn't drafted #1 because he deserved it. He was drafted #1 because Al Davis was a fool. Look at the players behind him. Peterson? Johnson? Willis? Russell just got Davis'd into the first slot.

What? To this day Todd mcshay says JRUSS ' S pro day was the best pro day he has ever seen. Coming out of college JRuss was accurate,had a cannon, and was mobile enough. Physically he is one of the most gifted qbs ever.
