is there some state law that says that UT-A&M could not play if they aren't in the same conference?

Hardly. Texas has the #1 athletic program already. Big is #1 in revenue
More money from being in the SEC. I don't think that's debateable, not with the SEC current tv contract.
Right now, Vanderbilt makes more money from tv than Texas does.

Texas also wants in the big 10 for academic reasons. It would increase their prestige. That's the big turnoff for Texas coming to the Sec

I think the Big 10 makes as much or more.
ETA: ! thing to remember, if the Big 10 expands, they'll add a CCG, that will increase their revenue by a decent amount.

Not debating that at all, but just pointing out that Texas doesn't need any more prestige they might get out of the Big Ten or Pac Ten they couldn't turn around and buy with the extra money from SEC membership.

not exactly, but apparently the state legislature has final say on whether UT is allowed to move conferences
I didnt know till this morning, but apparently when the Big12 was forming, UofH was the overwhelming favorite over Baylor, but Gov Richards blocked that b/c it was her alma mater and Baylor got in

something about something called the CIC
but ultimately, nothing
this is just some big ego-stroke to UT and an over-inflated sense of self importance of the Big10

Texas' prestige as a school isn't dependent in any way on what athletic conference they're in.

ron i think texas just realizes they'll be in the NC every other year if they join the big 10.

If Texas left, I could see Arkansas going to big 12....
Posted on 2/12/10 at 1:06 pm to Chad504boy
and if that were to happen, the sec could pretty much pick whomever they want
i would imagine it would come from louisville, ga tech, clemson, fsu, etc

no chance, they make way to much money in the sec to go to the big 12. Plus a main reason they would want to be in the big 12 would be to play Texas who was their rival in the SWC days.

They'd lose so much money.

Yup, Harvard, Yale, Princeton are loser schools.
Seriously though look at this. This is sort of a big deal academically.

If Arkansas left I think they would go for a team to compliment the west division like Texas A&M.
