Don't think we are going to see Iowa rock the boat. Ferentz said he thought all 5 conference should be canceling. Looks like its nebraska versus the world right now

Shocker that he wants to lay low for a while and let all the racial shite said about him by former players die down for an extra year.

Nebraska should respond:

"When we joined the Big Ten, we thought we were joining a football conference....we didn't realize we were joining a snowflake conference."

"Hey Big 10 + 4 - 1 Conference (and they brag about being an academic conference...lol) enjoy watching big boy football this Fall"

I think it’s a strong possibility. The Board of regents presiding over all 3 public universities have unanimously stated support for joining another conference. Kevin Warren has constantly been a disgrace in the 7 months he’s been on the job. Nebraska has never been lock in step with the B10, this might be the turning point to leaving

Nebraska should respond:
we couldn't be more disappointed by the threats being brought by the conference to a conference member. We left a conference in 2010 due to the conference treating some schools differently than others under the assumption that things would be different. We were wrong. Legal requirements to the conference may keep us from playing this year, which will we honor, but we want to let it be known that we will immediately being searching for a new home once those obligations are met

That would work too....

That’s not an option. They would need to leave now.

The Big 10 would want alimony, but they would eventually make a deal.

I hope y’all do it. You could play all your old rivals again.

I have zero idea how the big ten network works when it comes to media rights but I'm under the assumption that the conference owns nebraskas media rights and there is nothing they can do about it until that agreement is up. That's a total non starter for moving conferences. They are stuck for the time being unless something is weird about how the B1G has set up the network

When everyone talks about the potential for 4 mega-conferences in college sports, the scenarios of piecing together these conferences always involve too many teams, I think

The Purdue, Rutgers, Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon State, Cal, Colorado, Washington, Maryland, and Northwesterns of the world are proving that when the chips are down, they do not give a shite about sports.

I know college football is all about tradition, and conferences are a big part of that, but I really do think this is not just going to rock the boat; it's going to puncture a hole in it.

I think the super-conference we may see will be more of a "premier league" setup, with the 20 or so powerhouse college football programs in the country all joining up with one another, outside of the jurisdiction of the NCAA.

We’ll need to see what the contract says.

Politically, it wouldn’t be possible to leave at a later date.

I’m wondering what kind of force majeure language is in the various Big Ten contracts with regards to a season cancellation, which was pretty unthinkable before now.

Last FBS team to cancel a season without dropping the sport entirely was SMU circa 1989 (UAB dropped the sport entirely then reinstated it). Last time multiple programs canceled a season was during WWI, IIRC.

Point is that digging deep in the Big Ten’s contract, much like with ESPN’s TV deals, is that a lack of games one season could potentially make contracts void or voidable.

Depends on how written out the contract is for a situation like this, but Nebraska could easily argue that the contract has been broken by the league not allowing them the ability to play football and earn that money.

Fair enough. And I would also assume the conference literally canceling the season probably gives them so wiggle room

I dont think the would ever encounter too many political roadblocks regardless though considering they have no little brother that they have to take care of like OU with oSu and A&M and UT with Baylor and tech

No idea about sports contracts, but in my line of work pandemics have never been included in a force majeure clause

If a pandemic is not considered Act Of God / Force Majeure, then postponing or cancelling the season is arguably violating a number of contracts, or at least triggering clauses allowing schools and/or networks to escape the deals.

The Big 10 would have trouble making that claim if the other conferences play.
