NZ basically pulled off a cricket equivalent of the Warren Morris homer IMO.

Too late.

It really was a great finish though.

I need more details. Explain it to me like I'm five. And yes. I know about Warren Morris. But I want to know what happened in this cricket match.

Australia is the #1 team in the world and got 300 balls(or 10 outs) to put up a score.

A Ground ball hit to the boundary is worth 4 and a ball hit in the air over the boundary is 6. You can also hit the ball and run back and forth collecting singles. Most teams in the World Cup have been putting up 300-340.

New Zealand bowled(pitched) well and the aussies only got 151 before their 10 wickets(or outs).

Kiwis had to get 152 before their 300 balls or 10 outs. Their captain led off and got 50 runs right away before getting out.

They had a break for lunch with the Kiwis right there. Aussies came out and started collecting the outs and the pressure builded with some of the weaker NZ bats left in the lineup.

Another rule is one bowler(pitcher) can only pitch 60 balls. Aussies have several good bowlers but Starc was on his game last night.

Starc had 6 balls remaining and NZ was at 146 runs for 7 wickets(outs)

All NZ needed was 6 runs before they got 3 outs.

Starc got 2 outs on 2 pitches with some heat. Threw it right by the batters, they swung and missed.

Starc had one more ball left and threw heat to one of NZ's pitchers and he got the bat on it and stayed alive. Starc was out of balls and a new pitcher came in.

So NZ had a guy from the middle part of the order and then their last batter left still needing 6 before they got an out.

Williamson hit a 6 off the new pitcher and NZ won in front of their home crowd.

LINK

NZ stays in 1st place in their Pool and if the Aussies hold on to 2nd then these 2 could meet up in the finals.

NZ has never made a final and Australia has won the WC 4 times out of the 10 times its been played.

These 2 teams are the host nations this year and play home games all the way til the finals held in Melbourne.

I think the analogy would be closer to this one from "THeWalrus" in the World Cup thread.

quote:

Tiger and Phil are playing one round of golf in their primes. Tiger plays his round first and shoots an 82. Phil is a huge favorite and plays the front 9 in 33. He then starts playing horribly and needs a par to get 82 on the last hole. He chips in a birdie to win.

And throw in Tiger having one double digit majors and Phil looking for his first.

Luckily for the Aussies this was just a pool play game. Both teams will make the quarterfinals that start in about 3 weeks.

Thanks

Just started watching Cricket 2 weeks ago for the World Cup. Was always too confused to follow it but once you catch on its pretty fun.

I'm not sure it would ever catch on in the states due to the long games and sometimes tedious nature of it.

Plus some of the out calls are tricky to get the hang of if you havent been watching for awhile, similar to offsides in soccer.

But the World Cup has been exciting so far.

I was following the live betting for the match and when New Zealand was 72/1, one site was offering 1-1000 odds. So you bet $1000 to win $1. And they were thisclose to blowing it. Incredible.

It was great. Unbelievable finish. There is now way Australia should even have sniffed victory and yet, they almost won.

TN_Tigers - I had no idea you just started following the game. I've followed it most of my life and I was exchanging posts with you like you're a veteran follower of the game.

Your explanation above is the best description of the game I've ever read. You sir, are a remarkable poster. Well done!!

:cheers

I've watched some classic games and read up on the game some. I'm still learning the defensive fielding positions and some deeper strategy. Look forward to more high drama and banter on the WC thread.

It's hard to relate the one team doing all its batting first element to baseball. In my golf analogy, in reality they play simultaneously, but to connect it to cricket, one player finishes his entire round first.

That is the best explanation of the game ever. I'm on business in a country that the World Cup is the focus of all the locals. I have spent 3 nights at the hotel bar and talked to people from England, India & NZ while watching. Never got it until just now . . . . But alcohol could have been the issue also

This is shaping up to be one of the best world cups ever. I've followed every one since 92 when I was first exposed to the game as a teenager.

There's usually a couple of teams that lead the pack but not so this time. India are looking good but have sucked recently and lack bowling depth which will be a factor later in the tournament. South Africa are inconsistent and always choke on the big stage. Think Oklahoma in CFB. Not clear how good or bad Australia and NZ really are. Pakistan and WI look done but both have the talent. Ireland are wayyyy better than they ever were.

Can't wait!

exactly..it makes cricket unique and another reason why I think it would be a tough sport for a big number of Americans to embrace.

Largely, we like games that start/stop alot with many variables.

The game last night had alot of variables and was relatively short (5.5 hrs with the break). I was expecting to try to stay up for the long haul but made it through easily after New Zealand collected those wickets so fast.

I couldn't even begin to tell you how impressive your post is for someone that started watching the game seriously just 2 weeks ago. Great job man. You can't explain it much better than that

Here are the names of the different (defensive) fielding postions in cricket:

I'm starting to get the hang of the positions now just from commentary mentioning them on air.

Slips, Gully, Deep Cover, Mid wicket are usually talked about regularly.

Great Job. Even I caught some of that.

You should write and publish "Cricket for Dummies."
