Hoffmann is the bigger loss.
Not really, we still have a glut of pitching.
Waters will likely became a AAAA like Pache while Alexander and Hoffman won't sniff the show.

I think Hoffman certainly has the stuff to sniff the show. I just find this a weird trade package to get the 35th pick in the draft. We have no way of knowing what we're getting back. That is the ultimate "just take these guys off our hands, and we'll hope for the best" type of move.
I don't see Waters turning into much at the next level, so I'm not upset, in general, about trading him. I just found this to be kind of strange to trade multiple prospects for one unknown prospect.
If MLB would ever allow for teams to trade high first round picks, those kind of deals would make more sense. Hopefully they don't waste the 20th and 35th picks on Braden Shewmake type of players.

Yeah, this is kind of a strange trade. It’d be one thing if it were like the NFL or NBA drafts and they had their eyes on a guy who was still there after the 34th pick and they pulled the trigger knowing they were getting him at 35.
I guess I get they’re running out of time with Waters, and the OF is probably too crowded for him until ‘24 at the earliest, but we have such a shortage of position player prospects, especially OFers. Maybe they’re just trying to get younger in the farm since the big league roster is so loaded and young at the same time. Not much room for anybody, really, now that Harris and Strider are up, and it looks very much like for good.
And put me in the camp of “frick no” on shutting Strider down or moving him to the pen. Unless his velocity ticks down significantly or he doesn’t feel right at some point, I’ll take 5-6 innings of 100 mph fastballs with that slider, and his quiet swag out on the mound every 5 days. I especially want it in the playoffs. We’ve got high leverage pen guys already, and I kinda expect that to be AA’s biggest deadline move, finding one more.

Yeah, seeing Waters stagnate in AAA, it was beginning to feel imminent that he would be traded at some point pretty soon. The current logjam in the outfield just made it obvious. So I'm definitely not surprised to see him moved, just surprised that it's in this kind of deal.

I agree with all of that. Seeing Matzek looking like he's just kind of throwing and hoping right now, without that explosive velocity, I think adding a high leverage guy will be a priority. And while I can see how Strider might seem like the obvious answer to some, he's just too dominating in the rotation, in my opinion, to take him out now. My logic in thinking that is that you have to have a lead before you can protect a lead late, and guys like Strider don't grow on trees, who can just silence a lineup for 6+ innings.
Like you said, it will really come down to how his arm holds up, and if he's still got the same stuff/velocity by then. If, for any reason, it looks like they need to reel him in, then I can see him being a bullpen ace in the playoffs.

In other news, the Braves have finally promoted Vaughn Grissom to Double-A. That dude has been tearing it up, and he was already my top Braves prospect, even though all of the prospect ranking services had Waters at #1. I'm excited to see how he handles it. I think he has a chance to start skyrocketing as he begins to unlock more power. He's the most disciplined hitter that has come through the system in quite some time.
