know they want Grissom to play short every day in Gwinnett

I assumed Shewmake is playing ss for Gwinnett.

Looks like you are right... Found this snippet

The plan for both Grissom and Shewmake is to rotate starts in the middle infield. Grissom, who needs to work on his defense at shortstop, will start four times a week at short and twice a week at second base. (Minor League Baseball does not play on Mondays). Shewmake, who is seen as the better defender (and the most experienced at short, having played 197 of his career 206 minor league games there) will mostly play second base to acclimate to the position, in case he is needed as an injury replacement in Atlanta, but will get the remaining two starts a week at shortstop.

Sweep.

If there are any Cardinals fans browsing this thread, just know that your team is dogshit led by a dogshit, tryhard manager, and the arch smells like feet.

Can't browse the internet while constantly dodging gunfire

And I realize the irony of that coming from someone who lives in the BHam Metro

Thanks for posting that. I didn’t know they were rotating at all. But I like it. Man, Shewmake is already big league ready defensively at short. And they loved his bat coming out of college, but I think had given up on him being able to hit big league pitching every day. But apparently, he showed a ton of improvement offensively in the spring. Albeit a short sample size.

But if he’s figured something out and they think he CAN be the future everyday SS, then they could let Grissom get some reps in LF and bring him up to help this year. He’s a good enough athlete that I don’t think it would take long for him to be serviceable there. Can’t be any worse than Ozuna.

Jake from Locked on Braves was really down on Grissom ever being able to handle short every day all off season (I think he came off that a little after watching him all spring), but he kept saying he’d like to see Grissom in the super utility role kinda like the Dodgers use Chris Taylor (minus the catching). You could get him enough ABs that it wouldn’t stunt his offensive growth like just being the backup SS/2B would.

Again, it’s a balance AA is gonna have to figure out between what’s best for the ‘23 Atlanta Braves and the future ones.

This most concerning I've seen from Shewmake the last few years in the minors is that he couldn't catch up to fastballs thrown by career minor leaguers. He also chases a lot.

He just doesn't have the lateral range to cover the position for a full season, and that's something that you don't really learn overnight. So I don't think he will ever be a full-time SS in this league, but like you said, his value is that his bat plays to where he could be starting in LF, 3B, 2B or even RF for most teams right now.

I think for this season, he will eventually replace Adrianza as our utility guy and first-choice pinch hitter. Longterm for us, we either trade him to fill a need or he's our everyday LF that could also move to pretty much any other spot in the field if there's an injury.

Ian Anderson went on the DL with a sore elbow today. Oh boy.

I saw a comment somewhere else that mentioned his struggles pretty closely coincide with the sticky stuff ban. I had not thought of this before but now I do wonder if that has anything to do with his fastball getting crushed and his location getting worse?

It's still early, especially in AAA, but...

Grissom is hitting .500 with a 1.682 OPS. In 16 AB's, he's got 2 doubles, 2 triples and a homer. He's also drawn 4 BB and has yet to strike out.

Shewmake is hitting .190 with a .571 OPS. In 21 AB's, a double and a homer. He has yet to draw a walk but has struck out 8 times. He's just not an MLB hitter.
