Lymon Bostock.
I had tremendous respect for him after he was traded from the Twins to the Angels and had a bad start and attempted to return his April salary. The Angels refused the return and his salary was donated to charity. A man of character. Sadly, he was shot dead a few months later.

Were any of those Lokomotiv players young and upcoming? God, crazy to think a plane crash killing an entire team as recently as 2011.

Who was the guy (baseball player I think) who ran into the pier in almost identical fashion as Hernandez ? First thing I thought of when hearing about Hernandez.

Payne had just won the US Open the summer before the crash in the fall.
Is it possible, had he not won that US Open, he would not have been flying to the Tour Championship in Texas that day because he wouldn't have qualified for it?

The Mississippi State football player who died in a car crash in Mississippi. Last year?
The Nebraska punter this year in a car crash.
Phillip Lutzenkirchen in a car crash in Georgia.

Was anyone else near the top of their spot to pass at an age comparable to Jose? Sean Taylor seemed similar age wise

State lost Nick Bell (Sophomore DE) to some wildly rare form of cancer in 2010.
The most "in their prime" death from State was RB Keffer McGee in 1997. He was headed to the NFL after graduation, but drowned in a swimming pool a few weeks before the beginning of his senior year.

Greg Moore at 24 in 1999. Was my favorite driver at the time of his death. He was slated to race for Team Penske the year following his death. Castroneves took his seat and won 3 Indy 500s. Only time I was truly crushed by an athlete's death.

Lou Gehrig (37)-1941 ALS, although he retired it seems almost 100% that he retired because of his ALS.
He did. He probably had at least four more great years left if it wasn't from ALS. If you look at his stats, you can see the drop off in production over his last two seasons. His biography, Luckiest Man: The Life and Death of Lou Gehrig, talks about his last few games and how hard it was for him. Only time I had to stop reading a book because I was about to cry.
