Tulane's 7th Recruit: Jacksonville, FL RB Stephen Barnett (6-0, 185)
"...from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, became the Green Wave's seventh commitment Wednesday when he pledged his services to Coach Bob Toledo during an unofficial visit to New Orleans and the Tulane campus. Barnett was accompanied by his mother on the one-day visit."
"Barnett, with 4.47-second speed in the 40, chose Tulane over official offers from East Carolina and Navy. Barnett also has attracted interest from Nebraska, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Stanford, Virginia and Wake Forest."
"With a 3.2 grade-point-average, Barnett also is fully qualified, Belger said."

"I'm convinced things are moving in the right direction," said second-year Tulane coach Bob Toledo.

He was a GREAT hire for y'all...he seems very likable. Has the university worked to expand the recruiting budget at all? It would seem this would be an important step to get recruits down to New Orleans.
I would think Toledo would push hard for this...there are some good recruits in LA, TX, and MS that fall through the cracks every year.

The first thing yall need to do is find another venue, the Superdome ruins the atmosphere cause its half empty.

I agree...students just aren't going to go downtown with no tailgating, etc.
I am not sure what the answer to that problem is though.
Maybe they can buy up some abandoned houses in Gertown.

Toledo is very likeable and is doing a good job at Tulane. I think Tulane and the city of NO should build a stadium (about 30,000 capacity)at the fly that could be used for high school and Tulane games.

we discussed that earlier in the thread. it's pretty much impossible for a variety of reasons. i think they should just bulldoze loyola and put a stadium where their campus is

True that is a problem, but just a small problem compared to the main one. Does anyone remember the news piece that WWL did the week of the LSU/Tulane game in the dome this past year? They interviewed like 6 different Tulane students & I'm not lying when I say this, but only 1 out of 6 knew who Tulane was playing LSU, much less even had a game that weekend like 2 of the students. That one student who knew Tulane was playing LSU was wearing an LSU hat! He was a transfer student I think, but still a Tiger fan.

I am a Loyola Law Alum and I still can laugh at that.
Honestly, Tulane picked its poison building the on campus baseball stadium...they have limited space on campus.
You could always get some HUGE donors and buy up Audubon Place.

Most of the students are apathetic about Tulane athletics (although I would argue that Tulane Baseball is helping change that attitude).
A good portion of the student body obviously hails from the Northeast. It's all about pro sports in the NE - not college football.
Other significant home states for students include TX, FL and CA. It's a tough sell for some students to really invest in another sport (CFB) or a lesser football program when they've been cheering for Dad's UCLA or Mom's UT-Austin.

Tulane's endowment is over $1 billion (check out other schools - you'd be surprised how small most endowments are).
The athletic fund is another story...
The endowment apparently has little to do with what kind of straights Tulane is at least behaving like they are in right now
Real consideration was given to shutting down some of the graduate schools and as you may know large numbers of people were let go after Katrina
(Again, my original comment was that Tulane may not have the money to waste on football when so few schools can make 1a football an even break even investment)

They were 55 million under-insured for their Katrina damages...big oversight IMO.

well, the endowment has grown by over $350 million dollars since katrina so some of the financial difficulty was more warranted directly after the storm. also, endowments aren't spent. the money is invested and a percentage of the profit is spent yearly. i don't think it's very relevant to the athletic programs though because i don't think much, if any, of the endowment funds are spent on athletics

Unlike a lot of fellow ranters, I have nothing against Tulane, and pull for them just like all Louisiana teams. I don't know what Tulane can to do to attract decent recruits. Obviously, they are not going to get any top 20 players out of Louisiana, but if they could even get the best of the players ranked between 20-50, they could field a pretty decent team. The key, I always feel, is lineman. Where's the beef?? If you look at LSU's sucess since the days of Saban, it was because he was able to bring in a lot of large talented lineman, which Miles has been able to continue. For Tulane to be more successful, they need to get kids coming out of H.S. in the 280+ range, not 240 max. range. They don't have 2-3 years for kids to 'grow' into starters.

Tulane should play 1-AA. I mean seriously, how many of their 12 fans would they lose if they dropped down? Hell, they could probably actually be pretty good on a 1-AA level. And while you are at it, get out of that shitty CUSA.
The Ivy League schools are 1-AA. Since Tulane's a haven for Ivy League rejects, should they drop down to Division II?

They're attracting decent recruits. That's why they held their own for a half vs. LSU last year. That and LSU played down to Tulane's level. But it takes two to tango.

Tulane's two biggest problems are a lack of resources for football and relatively tough admissions standards. The former is a far bigger problem than the latter and will be difficult to overcome.
It's very tough for a small, private school to compete in major college football. Most top programs in college fb are enormous State U's with large fan bases and budgets.
That said, I think there is potential at Tulane to be at least on the level of a Southern Miss. My aspirant program for Tulane is Boston College. BC has been to something like 9 straight bowl games and is always competitive.
