Used a rape victim and her legal representation as leverage to settle with Baylor.

https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/attorney--art-briles-was-no-show-at-mediation-meeting-with-victim-222957191.html

quote:

Afterward, ESPN.com reported, Cannon called Hernandez’s representation to say Briles would appear at a mediation session on Friday.

From ESPN.com:

quote:

After Cannon filed the motion Thursday, he called Hernandez's Texas attorney and said that Briles "promised" to come to Friday's mediation session "to support Jasmin ... and help her, and to apologize to her and her family," Zalkin told Outside the Lines.

Zalkin said Hernandez was "cautiously optimistic" upon hearing the news. "She was definitely appreciative that he wanted to help and that he wanted to apologize," Zalkin said.

However, once Briles and Baylor agreed to a settlement about his removal as head coach, Cannon withdrew the aforementioned motion, meaning Briles again was represented by Baylor’s attorneys in the Hernandez case. Cannon and Briles were then reportedly no-shows for a scheduled Friday meeting.

From ESPN.com:

quote:

Neither Briles nor Cannon showed up for the mediation meeting on Friday, Zalkin said. The mediation ended without a deal, Zalkin said.

"[Briles] used the threat of helping Jasmin in her lawsuit against Baylor as leverage to negotiate his wrongful termination claim against Baylor," Zalkin said. "He doesn't care about victims. He never cared about victims. He's using victims. He used them to help build up his football program, and now he's using Jasmin to leverage more money out of Baylor."

Hernandez "was hurt. ... She was upset and she was offended," Zalkin said. He said Cannon did not offer an explanation for not showing up when reached Friday, only "that they decided not to come."

What do you want him to do? Not settle and just Baylor offers him a fair sum once the shitstorm settles? That would never happen. He did took the best offer for himself just like each of these victims will ultimately do. When one of them passes up a settlement to take their case to trial "on principle" call me. It won happen.

Baylor obviously insisted on a non-disparagement clause like any competent institution would do.

Not lie to a rape victim and use her as leverage in his negotiations.

How about he NOT do that.

Cautiously - for good fricking reason.

He aided, abetted, and enabled those who did.

That's as heinous as it gets without actually committing the acts yourself. Despicable.

You could also say that Baylor is lower than a snakes belly because they essentially gave Briles hush money.

I'm not defending anything a rules did in regards to the Baylor program. I think he absolutely should have been fired for this fiasco.

However he almost certainly did not intentionally lie about this mediation. At the time he probably intended to be there (for his own ends if nothing else). In the interim Baylor offered him a settlement that was contingent on not disparaging Baylor. He accepted and couldn't appear. Now taking that settlement is not being an absolute paragon of virtue, but everyone in this case will take the settlement that is best for them personally.

Why is it that Briles is so low for doing that? The victim said she was "cautiously optimistic" because she (or her attorney) knew that this could happen.

I found it interesting how none of Paterno's peers rebuked him after the Sandusky scandal became public knowledge. Well, there was one. Barry Switzer called out Paterno saying it was impossible to have an assistant on staff for years and years and not have an inkling about what was going on. But other than Switzer, CFB coaches basically kept mum about the whole situation. It makes you wonder about the skeletons college coaches have hidden in their closet.

Honestly is anyone surprised that Briles would act this way? It's his nature as a scumbag.

I like that the article is written as if Art Briles hasn't already demonstrated that he doesn't care about victims. If anything, this anecdote is in line with how he's conducted himself throughout this matter. This appears to be the first time Baylor has actually felt some pain from it, but we know it won't be the last time.
