Shame that we didn't have replay then. LINK

And, it wasn't even close.
When an ump blows a critical call THAT BAD, he should have a message waiting for him in the ref's dugout telling him that all of his shite has been packed, is waiting for him at the hotel, and that he should just get the f*ck out of dodge (on his own dime) because he just umped his last game.

It was definitely an awful call but Joyce was considered a really good umpire

I remember this like it was yesterday. One of the biggest travesties in sports history.
On a side note, I can’t believe this was 10 years ago. Where does the time go?

Leaning against the Rotolo's bar on Nicholson waiting to pick up a $5 calzone on that Wednesday night.

Should one mistake cost someone their entire career? I’m assured you must be mistake free in your field.
Joyce’s actions following these events combined with his record as an umpire to that point paint a picture worth looking into further

No doubt that I was also there.

So weird is you can see him about to ring him up and switches to safe mid motion.
It’s like the moment got too big for him and he choked.

Completely agree. I'm still shocked by that.

Here's where we'll disagree. Before and after that game, Joyce had an excellent reputation as an umpire. Granted, it was a bad call in a high profile circumstance but it shouldn't ruin his entire career. He himself admitted that he immediately went into the umpire's room after the game, saw that he blew the call and took responsibility for it. He was the home plate ump the next day when Galarraga came out to hand him the lineup card. Joyce was visibly emotional and apologized to Galarraga.
Thankfully, he wasn't fired, seeing as 2 years later before working a game at Chase Field in Phoenix, he spotted someone suffering cardiac arrest and saved her life using CPR. LINK

Joyce made a mistake, but he was a gentleman about it and admitted his mistake.
Gallaraga was all class about it as well.
ETA: there were some old school baseball men on that field and in the dugouts. I’m starting to really miss baseball.

The reaction of the batter was also great. He actually looked upset too

I was coming to post this.
The runner actually looked disappointed he was ruled safe. It was like he didn’t really want that or he knew it was wrong.

Disagree. I gained a TON of respect for Jim Joyce after the way he handled himself after blowing that call. Instead of running and hiding like other umpires, he manned up and owned it.

I can’t believe it’s been 10 years!
I was at the game, sitting in right center field. Watching it live from my vantage point I thought he was safe and that Jim Joyce made the correct call. It wasn’t until we were walking out of the stadium and walking by bars in Detroit that were showing replays where we saw that he was actually out. It was then where many people started yelling in the streets and being pissed off (myself included).

Joyce was a great ump with a solid reputation. It was a bad call but not as bad as Don Dekingers 1985 WS call.

Another screwup MLB has made. But hey could have made it right.

As a Tigers’ fan, I gained a lot of respect for Jim Joyce after that game. A lot of these MLB umpires have huge egos and would have fought tooth and nail against any criticism, and he wasn’t one of those guys. The fact that you didn’t know who he was before the game was probably all you need to know about his reputation. Yes, he kicked the call, but it really turned out to be one of the most memorable games in my lifetime. I don’t even remember Justin Verlander’s no-hitters, but I’ll never forget Armando’s game.

That's what I hated about the Umpire's Union in baseball, it was so powerful for whatever reason.
You couldn't fire these guys unless they murdered someone. They were untouchable no matter how crappy they were at their job.
Finally, in a disastrous and stupid negotiating tactic by the Union to get more pay and sick leave after being on strike, the Umpires submitted their resignations to MLB and MLB was like SWEET! And accepted over half of them...now we can finally get rid of these guys.
