Are there fewer fake field goals / punts in recent years than in the past?

I feel like there was actually a fair amount in the early 2010s and I can't think of the last time I saw a fake field goal.

My theory is because it's more common to simply go for it on fourth down in coaching circles and you probably have a better chance at a 4th & 5 play than a fake field goal.

Your theory is correct.

There was a fake punt in the UGA/South Carolina game today.

Seems like every LSU/Florida game in the Miles era had a fake punt or FG.

07, 10, 11, 15 off the top of my head

Saban even ran a fake fg vs Florida in 2002

SC's punter looks like a better QB than Spencer Rattler. Looked off the coverage beautifully and delivered a strike.

What follows should be that, if there are less of them, they should be more effective
