no cause most people, like fing Jaws right in the start of the broadcast, just look at a QBs W/L record.

If they push it though, I could see it replace passer ratin.

I still don't understand why a QB rating is even necessary. No other position has a rating system and it's not hard to tell which quarterbacks are the elite, above average, average and shitty ones. Do GM's look at passer rating when deciding who they want to sign?

cause most of the great players are to dumb to string together more than 3 sentences at a time?

dilfer isn't a bad analyst really

just b/c a guy is a shitty pro doesn't mean he's a bad analyst (or can't be a good coach, even)

actually, they do. There's advanced stats out there for assigning relative value to all positions.

ESPN is acting like this is revolutionary

They look at the more advanced stats fwiw.

QBs are the most important players in the game. They (and the center) are the only ones who touch the ball every single play of the game. It stands to reason that people want to know how good their QB is by himself. Now, unlike baseball, you can't remove all the other factors.

I should have clarified, I meant why should I care what he has to say in regards to the statistic.

and of course it's going to catch on, otherwise they will drill it in our heads until everyone uses it.

So who decided that total qb rating is going to be the official statistic used?

Truth is while most people complain about having guys like Tony K. or Dennis Miller as commentators and want football guys like Jaws/Gruden, if the latter actually broke down a game like real football people do it would be boring as hell for the audience.

See, thats the difference between the baseball stat community and ESPN. People took what Bill James did and expanded on it. ESPN is attempting to skip the many years of trial and error and just announce that they have the best statistic out there. Hell, even baseball doesn't have a full proof all encompassing statistic (you can argue WAR, but their are some issues with it still).

football is an impossible sport to have metrics like baseball

team spots v/ individual sport

Correct. I'm just saying there are some interesting statistics in football that ESPN is totally ignoring.

+1, that's why passer rating/qb rating is a ridiculous stat imo. There are way too many factors that affect the performance of a qb. Sounds like espn is trying to simplify the passer rating and take away the stuff that can hurt a qb's rating.

There are better stats but it takes to much time to learn and understand for the general public.

If ESPN spent an hour of prime TV trying to explain what Football Outsiders DVOA meant, it would help 7% and confuse 93%

i think they're just playing to the public

i don't think the public wants advanced metrics in football (well, baseball either, for the MOST part)

it's not ridiculous

it's just not perfect

go look at the QB ratings and you'll see a pretty good idea of how QBs stack up

I never thought of it like that. I'm not in the statistics are the only thing to rate players boat, but it fascinates me how people don't care about the advanced statistics.

ESPN will shove this garbage down our throats for a couple years until they realize no one cares. I'm all for advanced stats, but this is just retarded. If a QB has a good D that gives him a big lead he gets penalized because the game isn't close? If a QB throws a couple picks that keeps the game close, he gets a bonus if he plays good in the 4th even though he was the reason the game was close?

I think I read if a QB throws a pick and the other team doesn't score that pick doesn't matter? That has to be the dumbest thing I've ever seen put into a stat.

QB rating isn't perfect, but it does its job. Collects all passing stats and gives them a rating. It's not meant to be "Ohhh this QB has a 98 rating and this one has a 97 rating, the 98 is obviously better." But it does provide a way to quickly look at a QBs season. If his rating is over 100, he's had a great year. If it's over 90, that's usually a really good year. If it's in the 70s he's usually below average. If it's below 70, he fricking sucks. It could use some work. Definitely needs to take into account drops (by both receivers and defenders) and thing like hail mary interceptions to end the half. It would be much easier to add to QB rating than making TV shows to pimp a new bullshite stat that rates Eli Manning ahead of Philip Rivers.
