re: Any other Cubs fans not worried about the World Series at all?

Cubs had 7 hits and walked a couple times. They had chances, just couldn't get a big hit. That's a matter of luck.
That game doesn't concern me
What concerns me more than the offense was Lester's unexpected shaky start. Looked like the Indians got in his head. He'll bounce back though.

I remember kinda feeling like this in 2004. If they win , the story is over and they're just another baseball team. It ruins the fandom a bit or something. The hope to get there after all these years is what makes it fun to be a fan sometimes. If they win it all , a lot changes. It's weird to describe and I don't know that I'm doing it very well.

I'm a Cubs fan, but I thought going into it that Cleveland was going to get game 1. Kluber is a bona-fide ace and Cleveland has had a bit more time to mentally digest the enormity of the situation. They won the ALCS last Thursday and had more time to reset themselves mentally for the World Series. On the other side, I'm sure the Cubs celebrated long into the night on Sat. and they were still trying on Sun. and Mon. to absorb the enormity of what they accomplished. I suspect Chicago has now put any "we're excited to be here" feelings behind and are fully locked in to game 2 where the starting pitching advantage swings their way. Plus, though in a loss, they got to see a lot of pitches from Kluber and (especially) Miller. You can't help but think that they more they see Miller as the series goes along, the more comfortable they'll be when they step into face him. Finally, the Cubs are probably a bit deeper than Cleveland, which could come into play in the 3 games the pitcher has to take up a spot in the batting order

I think that is absolutely right. Going into 2004 much of the nation could empathize with the plight of Red Sox fans. Now there's no feel good story associated with them. They are probably now one of the more polarizing teams. It will be the same with the Cubs should they win. The whole "lovable losers" moniker will be gone and the joy in watching a long suffering fanbase hope for the day "it" happens will be no more.
It will be great seeing them finally win (if they do), but a part of what makes the cubs so popular will die at the same time. It's human nature to pull for someone to get their day in the sun after being in the dark for so long. Once they do, then no one cares anymore.

Not only that, but everyone will immediately call any Cubs fan "bandwagon" unless they're actually in Chicago. That's already starting to happen. Most of the game thread is a bunch of douchenozzles trolling the Cubs fans. Even people like moscona are on the radio calling us phony because we became fans because of wgn.

Why would you be worried, it can only go 2 ways:
1. Last night they had several big chances to take the lead or at worst tie. So they come out tonight, and make due on those chances and it's a route.
2. Because of first game and missing out on big chances, it gets in their domes and they struggle and make the Indian pitchers work easier.
After Klubber, Indians dont exactly have a starting staff of great ones, so i expect #1 to happen for at least a game or 2.

Yeah, this thing is already taking a mid-00's Red Sox turn quickly. But for those who have always been Cubs fans, frick it. Small price to pay for the success you've been longing for.

No doubt. I wouldn't trade the feelings I had last Saturday night when the Cubs won the pennant for any other sporting accomplishment, aside from them winning the World Series. I wasn't that emotional when LSU won the National Championship in 2003 or after the Saints won the Super Bowl.

quote:Cleveland had 10 hits. Chicago had 7. Indians drew 4 walks. Chicago drew 2. The only difference in the game is Chicago went 0fer with RISP. Let's not pretend like Chicago was dead and Cleveland was teeing off. I'll take the 164 game sample size over the 8 game sample size any day of the week. Especially when the team is #1 in every relevant metric. There is little to no dropoff on any given night going from Lester to Arrieta to Hendricks. There's a MASSIVE dropoff after Kluber. Cleveland has a good staff, but to say they have a better staff than Chicago and it's not close is just full retard.
And yet none of the matters. Cleveland has had MUCH better pitching in the playoffs, and last night proves I'm absolutely right.
