Any KC Royals Fan Around? Need Your Recs for Trip to the K

Headed to see the Royals play a couple of games next week. I know the stadium is well outside of the Downtown KC area. Am looking at staying downtown and driving out each night? It’s been several years since I have been in KC and this will be a different type of trip as I will
have my 12 year old son with me. I think I remember some here saying Uber rides are expensive and a long wait? Any other recs while in town? Will def hit some of the BBQ joints and a steakhouse.

I recommend staying at the Country Club Plaza. Closer to the stadium and plenty of things to do in the area. Plenty of tailgates in the parking lot and lots of food options in the stadium.
801 Chophouse for steak
Garozzo’s for Italian
Lots of BBQ options

I sampled most of the traditional BBQ places on one of my trips several years ago but the last time I was in KC (on the way to Omaha) I tried and liked Q39.

As another poster said, Plaza would be a great, central location to stay. Downtown would also be cool.
For steak I prefer Stockhill which is just off the Plaza. Capital Grille gets a lot of love as well and is pretty solid; I just have had better meals at Stockhill. I've heard good things about 801 but haven't been, it's expensive as shite.
For BBQ I prefer SLAPs which is on the KC Kansas side. There is also a place called LC's which is on Blue Pwky toward the K which I had a great meal at. It's a little dingy and ghetto, but the BBQ was awesome. Q39 is pretty solid and gets a ton of love from the locals. Z man sandwich and fries from Joe's is great. I think Jack Stack is a little overrated but the locations are convenient in Plaza and then in Freight House.
Tons of cool breweries and eateries Crossroads area as well, which is between downtown and the Plaza.
I've heard the Negro Leagues museum is nice, have never personally been. Also have the national WWI museum if that seems interesting to you or your son.

I appreciate a fellow Cubs fan helping me out with recs. I’m trying to get to a park each summer with my son (before he gets too old to think traveling with his dad is uncool). COVID wrecked our family trip to Wrigley in 2020, btw.
Had the opportunity to dine at their location in downtown Pittsburgh some years ago and was pleased with everything. It was what a small town LA boy always envisioned a steakhouse should be.
Being close by to where I’m staying would be convenient
Also sounds convenient since it’s en route to the K

You’ve gotten some good info. Q39, Char Bar and Jack Stack are near the plaza. If you are here on the weekend the best bbq is Harp BBQ only served on weekends at Crane Brewery which is near the stadium. LCs isn’t far from the stadium too. It is in the hood but is pretty good.
Boulevard brewery is a must. WWI museum is amazing. They have a VR experience right now where Dan Carlin narrates as you walk along the trenches. Negro Baseball museum is great too.
For breakfast in Plaza hit up Classic Cup or Big Bisquit isn’t too far from there.
You will love the K…great old stadium

Been waiting most of my life to see that waterfall IRL.

What?
Every time I have been to Kauffman there was very little "tailgate" activity. Not a knock on KC, great city and Arrowhead is one the great tailgating experiences in the NFL. Just saying, do your pre partying somewhere else. The stadium is top notch after the renovations.

I’m from KC and get back into town quite often, unless traffic is backed-up E. bound on 70 it’s a relatively painless, straight shot from downtown to the K, 10-15 minutes tops. Keeping a 12 y.o. engaged can be a crap shot, one leg in childhood and the other says teenager, I’ve got a 13 y.o. daughter I know. If you have time to burn there’s an awesome miniature golf course located kind of catty corner to the K, Cool Crest.
If you’re staying Downtown with a 12 y.o. & family there’s a lot of options nearby, Crown Center & Union Station have a variety of attractions with kids and families in mind. There’s Science City, Legoland, Escape Room KC, The Negro Leagues Museum, Nelson Art Gallery.
You’ll have your pick of BBQ and Steak houses, if you enjoy Mexican, the SW. Boulevard is right around the corner with a lot of great Mexican places like Manny’s or Los Corrales . You like beer, Boulevard Brewing Co. is along that corridor as well. Try Fritz’s on grand for a breakfast or lunch with the kids, they’ll love it.
Attractions at Union Station KC
*** As Shotgun Willie mentioned the WWI memorial and museum is the tits and it’s right across the street from Union Station.

Pulled pork Mac and Jack sausage. Probably my favorite stadium food. Great ballpark to just walk around. Underrated.
I don’t have updated knowledge, but I was in KC for a week back in 2015. Based off that trip: Original Arthur Bryant’s location early right after they open. And my favorite… I went to Oklahoma Joe’s twice - the little gas station place right across the Kansas border (unsure about their new name change).

Lot of good advice. I don’t have much to add. If looking for more non-baseball reccs, you could try the travel board. Have fun!

Do not go to Arthur Bryant’s.
Also forgot to mention the newly renovated Truman Presidential library in Independence, not far from the stadium

Yes.

I went to Arthur Bryant's a long time ago. It took at least an hour to get through the front door.

Trucking company I work for has a terminal near Worlds of Fun on the east side of the loop, and I've never had any issues getting to/from the games. Huge parking lots around the stadium and its always quick to get in/out from. Kaufmann is a great stadium to catch a game. Get a seat on the 3b line and you'll be in the shadows after 4p.

Yes I would recommend staying either downtown or on The Plaza and then driving out to the game. Don’t stay at the hotels by the stadium as there is literally nothing else around there. If you’re with your son, I doubt you’re seeking nightlife so I’d probably stay closer to The Plaza but the Crossroads District would be good too.
Definitely hit some BBQ like LC’s, Joe’s (in Kansas ), or Q39. Arthur Bryant’s used to be my favorite but I feel like quality has fallen off at the OG location. Smokehouse BBQ up north is solid too, if you’re looking for a more formal BBQ restaurant closer to the airport.
Definitely check out the Negro Leagues Baseball museum…it’s very well done. Also the WW1 museum. Would recommend Boulevard Brewery tour but not sure with a non-adult.
To your other post on tailgating, it’s very laid back and nothing like an all-out football tailgate, but it’s the best you’re gonna get before the game. Since the stadium is by itself in the middle of nowhere, there are not “pre game” places to go or hang out. People usually just grill and drink a couple beers beforehand…KC folks are crazy nice, you’ll be welcomed at pretty much anyones tailgate and probably given food and drink.
Overall, hope you enjoy the trip! The K is a great underrated stadium and I think you’ll enjoy your experience. Happy to answer any specifics if I’m able to!

I've seen lots of bbq recs but I haven't seen anyone mention The Peanut, which has the greatest bar food known to man. When I was in middle school, I was there and met a morbidly obese family from Buffalo, NY, who proclaimed the wings to be the best they'd ever had, even better than the Anchor bar. Obese ppl from buffalo = ultimate wing endorsement. They're huge (the wings), and have a nice kick, crusted with black pepper (and don't sleep on the bleu cheese dip either). Wings, incredible nachos (don't be afraid to ask for more cheese), BLT, chili cheese fries to die for (probably literally), and lots of craft beer. I had my thirteenth (13th) birthday there, and it shaped the man I am today. Do your son the same favor.
As for BBQ, LC's is the move on gameday if you plan on tailgating. Always fun to toss a ball in the parking lot with your son and eat some Q. (The owner died last year, I don't know if that will affect quality).
Jackstack is also perfect for gameday, especially if you're staying downtown or on the plaza. Jackstack is my favorite in KC for two reasons: Lamb ribs, and their beans, which are thick, smoky, sweet and have copious chunks of burnt ends. Another great spot is Char Bar, but that's more of a hang-out spot than a take-out spot. They've got lawn games like bocce ball or some shite. Great summer spot, and the duck gumbo is pretty awesome. (Very quietly, the top-rated BBQ in the city is/was available only on saturday afternoon at the venerable Crane Brewery in Raytown.)
Negro Leagues HOF is great, and right next door to the Jazz museum. I'm a fan of killing birds with stones efficiently, so anytime you can kill two or three with a single toss, I'm in. These are located near (or on) the famous 18th and Vine district, near downtown. There's a ton of history, and if your kid is into it, well done. Good on ya.
