If Schilling goes in before Bert then there needs to be an investigation.

I remeber when he first announced his retirement people were saying that he was gonna be a sure fire hall of famer, possibly first ballot
Verducci said it was possible but unlikely

3000 Ks

3 time world champion frontline starter for 3 different teams

dominant postseason pitcher. Not "Andy Pettitte" average. Dominant, like Smoltz.

he's led the league in K's twice...Wins twice...he should have at least 1 Cy Young...he finished 2nd 3 different times.

and as Verducci points out, best K:BB ratio ever

Schilling didn't win the Cy Young, but was named TSN's pitcher of the year on top of winning the Roberto Clemente Award and a WS MVP in 2001. That alnoe puts him ahead of Petitte -- actual hardware.

Schilling is 15th all time in strikeouts, and 43rd in ERA+ (ERA adjusted for era). By the Blank Ink test (number of times led the league in category), he has 42, and the average HoF has 40. By Grey Ink (times in the top 10), he has 205 when the average HoF'er has 185. By contrast, Petitte scores 7 on the Black Ink and 103 in the Grey Ink.

Schilling is a borderline HoF candidate. He could go either way and it wouldn't enhance or hurt the institution. Frankly, I don't care. But Petitte has as much business going to Cooperstown as Bob Welch (one of his most simliar statistical pitching comps)

WE SO TOTALLY DID

Well, just the hall of fame part. Nothing about 1st ballot.

I'm guessing that he's not going to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. It's really tough to do that in your first year, to get that 75 percent. His career is somewhat parallel to that of Don Drysdale, and it took Drysdale a few ballots to get in.

He is saying that he won't be a 1st ballot HOF, I agree with that. Who is saying that he is?

They both get in.

Pettitte has played in 7 World Series, looking for an 8th. And he has performed well in the postseason. And he is a Yankee. He has a lot of things going for him that don't really matter, but still do.

the baseball HOF isnt nearly as liberal as say, the basketball HOF, when it comes to team oriented accolades like this

Will the BWAA ever acknowledge the set up role as a bona fide HOF position in this era of specialty. I would say no but then again what would have happened if Wetteland came in with Riveria (if same age). As Riveria was Wetteland's set up guy for the first WS.

The Yankees would have figured out within about a year that Rivera was a lot better.

Schill, Scott, and J.R. Richard all should go in together. Why not have the Astros have Enos Cabell give their intro speeches.

Im not sure Riveria was better than Wetteland. Wetteland was banished in Montreal at start of his career, so we will never really know what his true talent as a closer was.
