That's a good question...and the answer is it shouldn't be...but if it is the law should be applied equally. Frankly I will never understand why people care if gays get married.

There are issues of ownership of property and succession that are tangled up in marriage and rightfully so but I do think it would be better on everyone if we came up with a different word and when you got "married" in the church you are simultaneously joined in the eyes of the state for legal purposes and if you so chose you can do one without the other or both if you can find a church to "marry" you in the eyes of God.
