ACC is ‘closer to the end’ in conversations to do away with league’s divisions

Whether it becomes official here this week during the ACC’s annual spring meetings or sometime in the not-so-distant future, the conference appears likely, sooner rather than later, to adopt a new football scheduling model that would abandon the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions.

With the exception of the pandemic-altered 2020 season, the ACC has used a divisional model in football since 2005, when the conference grew to include 12 schools. Now, though, amid an urgency to enhance its football product and maximize its ability to generate revenue, the league appears on the verge of going to a division-less model, which would allow most schools to play each other more often than they do now.

"We’re closer to the end than to the beginning,” Dan Radakovich, the Miami athletic director, said here on Tuesday, when asked about the possibility of the ACC adopting a new scheduling model. Radakovich added that there’s strong momentum behind a model that would leave each of the ACC’s 14 full-time members with three permanent football opponents, and a two-year rotation with the other 10 schools in the league.

In that scenario, teams would play the same three opponents every season, in addition to a group of five teams in even years and the other five remaining teams in odd years. It would take two seasons, and not the current six, or more, for every ACC team to play every other team in the conference.

I think they’re just waiting for Texas/OU to give them a perfectly aligned schedule at 16 teams

3 permanent
6 / 6 alternating

Anything over ten teams and I feel you need divisions. There are just going to be too many teams you don't play in order for them to fairly come up with the teams in the championship game.

Interpretation:

Fla State, Miami, Clemson and Notre Dame bout to play each other every year now.

I expect the universities will choose their historical rivals.

And they played a full conference schedule there during Covid when everyone only played conference games.

Which has nothing to do with this 3-5 arrangement being proposed. Those 5 games a year are rotational Out of conference games

Good

The fact that there are 12 years in between LSU traveling to Georgia to play football is a travesty.

You can’t claim to be in the same conference when you are scheduled to play twice in 12 years

Acc should also add ND and West Virginia.

Watch Clemson's three opponents become Duke, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech.

Especially for LSU and UT.

LSU fans would be split on wanting A&M, Ole Miss, Texas, Bama, Florida and Auburn lol

They're "affiliated" with the conference. They need to quit being bitches and join either the ACC or B1G. I'd prefer they go B1G but whatevs.

Bama will need to preserve their natural fierce rivalries with Missou, Vanderbilt, Rocky Top, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Moo State on a yearly basis.

I would think it ends up being FSU, GT and NC State.

Probably. But I'm curious how every team will likely end up with different permanent rivals. For instance, that OG group with Virginia, Duke, UNC, NC State, and Wake Forest is very tight.
