ACC CCG attendance

Why is the attendance so horrible for this conference?
Figures:
2005 FSU/VaTech 72,749(Seats 76K+)
2006 Wake/GaTech 62,850(^^)
2007 BC/VaTech 53,212(^^)
2008 BC/VaTech 27,360(Seats 65,857K)
2009 Clemson/GaTech 42,815(^^)
I can't imagine the SEC or Big10CCG not selling out, let alone getting some of the low numbers of attendance this conference pulled in several years.
Is location the problem? Or do ACC fans just suck?

Jacksonville was a better site than Charlotte. When Wake and BC play in it, the numbers are way down. The SEC got it right when they moved to an indoor stadium. FSU, GT, VaTech, UNC and Clemson will always have to be in it to keep attendance up.
ETA:
Those 2 were in Tampa. BC isn't going to travel anywhere and the conference has been so shitty lately that the teams weren't decided in time for fans to make travel arrangments.

Yeah I believe they put it in FL in hopes that it would most commonly be a game played between FSU and Miami. As you can tell that match-up hasn't happened yet and only once has either school made it there. Of course that means it is a decent travel for the rest of the ACC fans (especially BC) but this year I believe they are putting it in Charlotte, ironically a year when Miami looks like its a strong favorite to win the ACC.

I guess VA Tech in 2007 had an outside shot, but other than that, when was the last time an ACC CG had BCSCG implications?
Between that, and the locations... yeah it's going to be tough to get fans to want to travel.

That conference will always take a back seat compared to the SEC in football. I remember watching one year where they barely had 20,000 at the game in actual attendance.

It doesn't help that one of the participants can be locate 1000 miles away. ACC has the worst divisional structure in all of college.

quote:Exactly. And if I was them, and would have travel all the way to Florida for the ACCCG, I'd just watch on TV too, then hopefully book a trip to the Orange Bowl instead. It's not easy for the average fan to make that sort of trip twice in a 5 or 6 week span.

This has been as bad as the ACCCG the last few years. Since the FSU-PSU 3OT game in 2006 the OB has had matchups of Wake-Louisville, VT-Kansas, VT-Cincy and GT-Iowa.

They really need FSU and/or Miami to step it up, then.

Why the ACC doesn't do a North and Souht division alignment with the CCG in Charlotte is beyond me. It would still be tough for attendance because the conference covers so much geography, but would yield better results.
I wonder if the PAC10 will face a similar challenge when it gets a CCG.

I don't think it would make a difference to realign the teams because it doesn't change the fact that they are too far apart. One thing that I think could work is changing the venues to "destination" cities. Instead of having the game in Jacksonville, Tampa and Charlotte, maybe try Miami, DC and NYC. There would at least be the incentive of having a lot more things to do besides the game itself.

The ACCCG was in a dumb location. Plus IT's one of the lower tier conf champ games so it gets put on like a tuesday or wednesday. Not good for travelers if they also want to try to make a bowl game.
Most ACC fans aren't really that hardcore so they won't do midweek travel.
The tobacco road schools want to stay together. Plus the South would be stacked and the North would suck balls.
