The AAF is trying to be what the USFL should have been 30 years ago. They are trying to follow the same original plan Dave Dixon and co. drew up without making the same mistakes that eventually ended the league (greedy owners including, but not limited to Donald Trump, breaking away from the original plan in pursuit of their own self interests)
In essence, the AAF is trying to be football socialism. All eight teams are owned by the league and the players are all paid roughly the same. Unfortunately, just like with socialism, you can only have so much of someone else's money before they start demanding to be a decision maker motivated by their own self interest...just like this guy now being named the league Chairman in exchange for his $250 mill. If the league doesn't generate enough revenue on its own it will need to bring in more investors...who will in turn want something for their investment.
Eventually, the better players are going to separate themselves and want to earn more than the other players
And they are trying this at a time where there are so many media/entertainment options available that they average person could just gloss over the games and never know this league existed. That's a far different media landscape from when the USFL began. Then, there were limited channels and just getting on TV meant you were going to get several million viewers
The USFL was able to gain some traction once they deviated from the original plan and started to hit the NFL at its weak spots. Namely, allowing college underclassmen to leave school early and enter the USFL (which was prohibited by the NFL) and by allowing rookies to be paid huge contracts the NFL wouldn't pay. That led to Herschel Walker, Steve Young, Reggie White and others joining the league. Capitalism then took over and the idealistic vision of everyone operating within a predetermined set of values and financial parameters went out the window.
In the end, self interest ALWAYS wins.

The AAF missed payroll in Week 1. They told agents that it was a glitch with switching to a new administrator. They told players would be paid by today the latest.
If you ever work for a company that isn't established and you hear that, start looking for another job.

I love when he picks the worst hills to die on
He was tweeting at the CEO of Twitter the other week about how much he think he could make if he started charging people to use Twitter
Waiting on his next argument on why the drinking age should be 50

I feel like I subconsciously cooled some on the AAF after the first weekend.

At least locally in Bham, there was some momentum and buzz. I imagine this news takes some wind out of the sails.
If they were about to miss payroll, it makes you wonder what other bills they weren't paying.

I think if I were a Carolina Hurricanes season ticket holder, I’d be pissed. They could miss the playoffs by a spot, but the owner had an extra 250M laying around? WTF!

there is a hard salary cap in the NHL
and the hurricanes are on fire, lately
they better be buyers at the deadline

Its the way the brain works partly. Initially viewing the contest- its football, its great.
As your brain absorbs the "game" over the week, it recognizes if it was actually worthy of going back to again. Repetition on what the brain enjoys- addiction basically.
After a week of processing, your brain was telling you the product didnt bring you the enjoyment of that initial "it's football" euphoria and that you could seek out something more interesting.
So bad sign #2 for this league

I'm just a little down. 2 weeks ago was the greatest win in my SA Commanders history. Just such a powerful game.
We followed it up this weekend with hands down the worst loss in the history of the franchise. Just such a brutal gut punch.

And I think they only have about $16m of cap space left.
(They should totally trade that 1st round draft pick to Detroit for Jimmy Howard)

If they're missing payroll in week 1 then the league doesn't have time to worry about eventually. Also better players in the AAF have almost no leverage to ask for more money. If they switched out the entire roster of the league next weekend no one would notice.
