just got done watching one of my favorite movies. Final Shot, the Hank Gathers story.

NBA lottery pick from loyola Marymount dies on the court during a game. Still heart breaking every time I watch it. I love you man. And I love college basketball even in this time of bs.

LMU put up a Hank statue about a month ago. Same guy that did the Shaq and Magic statues.

I remember watching some early conference tournament game when they broke in with that news. March 4, 1990. Hit me hard as a HS basketball player at the time.

They were such a fun team to watch. A hulk of a man just collapsed and gone right after thundering alley oop jam. It was really sad.

Their run after that with Bo Kimble and Jeff Fryar was memorable as well. Blasted defending champ Michigan only to eventually get rolled by that nasty UNLV title team. LSU beat both that year.

I remember they were scoring well over 100 nearly every game in Paul Westhead's fast paced shoot right way system.Lots n lots of threes.Gathers would have been a very good pro player with his size & skills. They beat defending champ Michigan 149-115 in the 2nd round. When Bama played them in the Sweet16 Wimp took the air out of the basketball using nearly the whole shot clock, combining that with his in your face defense with the athletes to keep up with them. Final score though was 62-60.I thought we passed up to many open scoring opportunities & it cost us. Can't believe it's been 30yrs ago.

Btw I remember Bo Kimble shooting all of his free throws one handed in honor of his fallen buddy.Seems like he made all of them.

Kimble, who was right handed, shot his FT's Left handed to honor Gathers. What many people don't remember is Kimble and Gathers played their FR season at USC. Both transferred to LMU after USC hired a new HC who revoked their scholarships.

Watching Gathers collapse on the court was tough to watch and that 30 for 30 will make you

I remember watching it on Sportscenter that night.

Still can't believe ESPN showed the entire event of his collapse and then dying on the court.

And they barely warned you just saying you might want to look away.

He had stopped taking his heart medication because he said it made him listless and have no energy for the games. There was no trace of his prescribed heart medication in his body when he died.

Plus I remember them saying he went the the field and ran around the track that same day. Something he had not done before.

With the better meds today he probably would have felt fine taking them while playing. It was very tough to see on tv.That was a special team to continue on & go as far as they did.

Really obscure fact but Wikipedia says it was Erik Spoelstra (Miami Heat Coach) guarding Gathers when he collapsed. Kind of crazy.

I just watched the 30 for 30 last week. Gathers last offensive play was an ally-oop slam dunk from Kimble. IIRC, Gathers was going back on defense during a press when he collapsed near half court. Since LMU was on defense, HG was likely guarding Spoelstra.

If playing today, Gathers would likely have never been allowed to play college sports due to his heart condition. Universities do not want to assume that liability.

I loved that “ Running The System” LMU and eventually George Mason ran. I was in college when Hank Gathers collapsed. It was unreal how ESPN kept showing the video.

UNLV had beaten the #12 seed in the Sweet Sixteen by just two freakin' points a few days earlier.

So you thought the #11 seed Loyola could really do this. They could make the Final Four. Everyone was believing it, there was something magical going on.

And then the real UNLV showed up and ruined the party and rolled everyone left for the title, including making Duke look like a WAC team.
