Currently a 50% chance of rain for the race. Obviously, very early for predictions.

Thanks. I was wondering.

Sushi claims the Red Bull isn't particularly hard to drive on the stimulator.

quote:

“I spent about two days in the simulator – he added – from this experience, I don’t find the car particularly difficult to drive . Of course, the way I want to set up the car is different to Max’s. I want to develop my setup, understand it well and gradually push myself to the limit from the first test session”.

Yuki was brimming with confidence even before he got on the simulator. I assume it's because he was happy with his performance in the 2024 car at the Abu Dhabi test. But Liam was very close to him in qualy last year, so somehow he has convinced himself that he's on another level from Liam. In the simulator they can reproduce the exact conditions that Liam had in his previous sessions, so if they did a direct comparison that way, then maybe he has something real to go on.

I saw a YouTube video that analyzed Max vs Liam based on the camera looking down into the cockpit. Basically Max's steering inputs were consistently much smoother than Liam's. It would have been nice to be able to analyze their braking and throttle inputs as well, but the gist is obviously that you need to be super smooth and progressive in your steering and throttle inputs to maximize performance. So maybe Yuki knows that his style is smoother than Liam's.

One thing for sure though, if Yuki struggles badly at first, he'll be given a lot more races to get up to speed than Liam was given.

Here's Honda's Wednesday show run. You can press the cc button to turn on subtitles, and then turn on auto-translate to English.

Liam and Yuki both drove 2011 Red Bulls in their respective modern team liveries, and they sounded awesome. Yuki was noticeably more aggressive and stylish with the rear-wheel steering through the tight hairpins, so maybe that means something.

Max drove his 2021 car. The sound from this car sucked. The high rake of this car looks so goofy.

Then Isack went out in a 2011 Red Bull, so it was probably the same car that Liam drove, they just swapped the number decal. He was terrible through the tightest hairpin. He knocked the front wing on the inside curb.

Then they gave Yuki a second run. He's the drifting champ among the four drivers.

Then they sent Yuki and Max out at the same time. It looks like the 2021 car is significantly wider than the 2011 car. The 2011 car just seems more nimble and fun.

Think it might have been Liam Lawson that struggles through the hairpin and hit the front wing on a curb.

Both Lawson and Hadjar struggled with the hairpins. Yuki was downright giddy and nailed the hairpins.

Here's Hadjar knocking the front wing on the curb:

I’m really starting to love Max.

I think I like him in a subpar car even more because I’m starting to think if it was equal he would absolutely crush everyone.

Just had to look him up.
Can’t say I remember him at all besides the drama about his contract he had the following year that he sued sauber about.
Saw Jules Bianchi was a rookie with him in 2013 that year and had to look up which year his accident was.
2014 Suzuka but the race was in October that year and it was raining and late afternoon. Sad deal.
As much as rain can make a weekend more exciting, they don’t need to have another screw up like that ever again.

Wasn’t Giedo teammates with Alexander Rossi at one point? Maybe Rossi was just the reserve driver.

caterham I believe.

Yeah I have no memory of Giedo van der Garde as a driver either, I remember him only because he was involved in the legal dispute with Sauber.

For those unfamiliar with this story, here's is a Cliff's Notes version: When Peter Sauber wanted to step back from the team, he hired one of the company's lawyers named Monisha Kaltenborn to be team principal. I have no idea how much experience she had on the team operations side of things, but man she sucked.

Sauber announced their 2015 drivers and Giedo van der Garde was not one of them. But van der Garde had an iron-clad contract with Sauber in 2015 that guaranteed him a seat in one of the cars. I know this because he took his case to some arbitration board in Europe, and they agreed with him, his contract guaranteed him a seat. Sauber ignored it and went to Australia for the first race. So van der Garde went to an Australian court and they agreed with him as well. They also said that Sauber would not be allowed to race in Australia if van der Garde wasn't in one of the seats. That's how strong his case was. But the arrogant lawyer Kaltenborn said van der Garde is not getting a seat. So it wasn't looking good for Sauber. Finally van der Garde relented and came to an agreement with the team (compensation) so Sauber could race in Australia. He didn't have to do it, but he said later that he didn't want to harm the careers of the two Sauber drivers who would have been prevented from racing.

So for me, Monisha Kaltenborn is the worst F1 team principal I've ever seen.

OK you guys, FP1 is tonight.

If you haven't updated your TD F1 prediction yet, you might want to adjust it for the Yuki / Liam seat swap!

Please update it as soon as you can. Predictions will be locked out this evening maybe around 6-7 pm CT.

Modified floor for Haas this weekend. A real rush job due to the high speed nature of this circuit.

"It is a risk," Komatsu admitted. "It's a judgment call. But to me we had no option.

"The scale of the issue in Melbourne was huge. We were the slowest car by country a mile. So we had to do it."

A fully new floor would be the optimal solution, but would take a lot longer to validate and then physically make the parts.

Asked by The Race to explain the shortcut compared to a typical upgrade path, Komatsu said: "Honestly, we just relied on our aero guys and designers' understanding to make certain modifications.

"So certain things are geometrically different and aerodynamically different as well.

"We just put everyone's latest understanding, without any proof, because we had to design it, we had to release it, we had to make it - otherwise we weren't going to make it here.

"So, we had to do it. But then, respectively we put it in the windtunnel, to see if that idea is actually correct or not.

"It is correct. It's definitely the right direction. But I just don't know how much difference it's going to make."

I like that. Knew it needed to be done and had the stones to do it right now. Didn’t want to go to his home race with a slow car ha

Darn it, I have my predictions for Haas pretty high. They better not suck.
