I'm going to watch the IndyCar race for the first time this weekend. I am an F1 fan and have a few questions accordingly.
Are all the cars identical? If you are responding to this you are aware of the grand differences between the cars in F1.
Is there a lot of passing/overtaking? If you are responding to this you may be aware there is not a lot of passing in F1 for various reasons.
Is it easier to draft and overtake in IndyCar? I watched highlights of the Detroit race and Indy 500 and noticed how often the lead driver would zoom from white line to white line and I am assuming that is to keep the following driver from drafting and passing him.
Anything else you think I need to know that will make my experience easier? I'd like to get into our open wheel racing series. I am a former NASCAR fan and now a big F1 fan.

different engines, same chassis. Honda/Chevrolet engines

yes.

there is a "Push to Pass" button in IndyCar that gives the driver an immediate 60 HP Boost. Generally, they can only use this button 150-200 seconds per race and only ~20 seconds max at once. This button helps overtaking and allows for strategic use.
Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport and rightfully has all the glitz and glam, but i think Indycar is better for pure racing. There isn't one dominant car/team that just steamrolls everyone else every year via engineering and bank roll.
TouchedTheAxe will hopefully comment further.

The red vs black tires is much better than the pirelli mess in f1. The strategy in indy car is much more fun than watching Ferrari constantly double stack with the wrong tires

What's the difference in the tires?

Red much faster but they fall off a cliff. Hafta use both compounds and refuel. In F1 they don't have the same amount of degradation so you have boring one stop races and zero strategy unless it rains or a safety car.

They're the same chassis but the teams can adjust the suspension as they wish. Mostly with the shocks but also sway bars and alignment settings. Meaning they are not all set up identically like the old IROC series or anything. The team still matters when it comes to getting the setup right.
Bodywork is all the same.

Penske is testing today @ Road America. Convenient scheduling to say the least considering what race is next.
RA was repaved this past fall so it will take completely different setups than previous races. Penske planning ahead by scheduling this test.

Yeah basically the cars are identical except for the two engines. So it comes down to set-up abilities.
But the last time I checked, the one area where the teams have full control to develop and modify is the dampers. This gives the wealthier teams a subtle way to differentiate their cars, by putting more money into research to optimize the dampers for each track and condition. The article below talks more about it.
Penske has a separate company, Penske Racing Shocks that develops racing shocks for many applications, so they may already have an advantage there. It might even be Roger Penske himself who suggested allowing the free development of dampers (this started before Roger bought the series).
How dampers are key in IndyCar’s development battle
Another subtle thing about IndyCar is the technical alliances, such as between Meyer Shank and Andretti Autosport. In a way it's like having a six-car team, since the data is shared between the teams. While it obviously comes down to money (the bigger, more established team is happy to take money to share their data), this is another way that a younger or new team can become competitive. It's the opposite of F1, where they make it as hard as possible for a new team to succeed.

Oh right, gotta mention refueling. The character of the race, and the characteristics of the tires are so different in IndyCar because of refueling. Refueling opens up strategy, and road races are typically two or three stops. In F1 the cars are very heavy at the start of the race so the better drivers are distinguished by their ability to take care of their tires early in the race, but that's not exciting to watch.* If F1 went back to refueling, the races would be way better.
*Although to be fair, at the recent F1 Miami race where Max had a bad starting position, he showed his ability to run faster lap times on much older hard tires than Perez. Since we had the ability to monitor lap times, it was quite a sight to see Max basically humiliate Perez and win the race.

What are the classic races in IndyCar besides the 500?

Always look forward to Long Beach, Mid-Ohio, Leguna Seca/Montery, Detroit (Belle Isle), and St Pete.

Yep. Was there the year Foyt almost bought it. Everyone at the track thought he was dead as the brought his car back under a tarp. (We had paddock passes which meant you were right in amongst the teams. Almost got my foot run over by an Indycar and nearly knocked Willy T on his arse when we ran into each other coming around a trailer. Roush was walking with him. There was a TA support race.)
Alfa Romeo had an Indy engine that year as well. Can remember it's distinctive sound well. Sounded Italian.

Anyone been to the Nashville race? If so, where would you sit to see wheel-to-wheel passing action? Turn 1 off the main straight is always a good one at every racetrack. Can anyone offer a general review of the race? Thank you.

Power going hands on with Scott Dixon during practice. Dixon going slowly just turned in front of power. Both cars trashed.
