Well this will probably be drowned out by the NFL chatter. It's good IndyCar ends their season just as the football season gets started.
IndyCar at Laguna Seca is right now on NBC!
Here are your championship contenders and their starting positions.
Will Power did what he has done all season, keeping himself high on the grid. It's his championship to lose.
Josef Newgarden completely botched his qualifying as he went off in the Corkscrew and got his car stuck in a way I've never seen.
Scott Dixon also botched his qualifying but he is in a decent position if Power has trouble during the race.
I think Scott McLaughlin and Marcus Ericsson are too far back to take it, but anything can happen.
Starting position - Name - Championship position: Points
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
P01 Will Power (Penske / Chevy) P01: 523 pts
P07 Scott McLaughlin (Penske / Chevy) P05: -41 pts
P09 Marcus Ericsson (Ganassi / Honda) P04: -39 pts
P13 Scott Dixon (Ganassi / Honda) P03: -20 pts
P25 Josef Newgarden (Penske / Chevy) P02: -20 pts
In the Rookie of the Year battle, Christian Lundgaard built a 41-point lead over David Malukas just a few races ago. But Malukas went from a rocky start early in the season to being a top 10 driver in the 2nd half of the season. He's just 5 points behind Lundgaard now, and here is where they are starting:
Starting position - Name - Rookie of the Year position: Points
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
P06 David Malukas (Coyne / Honda) P02: -5 pts
P16 Christian Lundgaard (RLL / Honda) P01: 293 pts

The helicopter view of Laguna Seca is awesome.
Oh, here is how Newgarden got stuck in the Corkscrew during qualifying...

Interesting, the main strategy is a 3-stop race, but some guys pitted early (because the soft reds don't last long) and the announcers said they'll have to do 4 stops! That's a lot of tire wear.
My understanding is that Laguna Seca is going to be re-surfaced this year.

Wow, with high tire wear and one FCY, Suddenly Newgarden is in P2 and Power in P3 is struggling. Crazy how this race is developing.

17 laps left...
Palou
Newgarden
Power
Grosjean
Grosjean is the wild card on the finish...tires may not make it but he is surging and still had lots of push to pass...almost caught up to Power

Wow the high tire wear situation separated the men from the boys. Palou absolutely dominated this race, and Newgarden went from P25 to P2. But it was too little too late as Power finished P3 and secured his 2nd IndyCar championship by just 16 points over Newgarden. Power had just one race win this year, while Newgarden had five wins! Power was just relentlessly consistent from race to race and really deserved it.

Newgarden was fun to watch. Made some great passes.
I don’t usually pull for Penske drivers, but I didn’t mind seeing Power win the championship. He really made it a goal and worked on the points this season, rather than crashing out when running poorly as he often did in past years.
I wish Robin Miller was still around to give us his take on it all.
