To me, it’s becoming more apparent with these conditions that the heavy, straight hitters are going to have a much better chance than usual this year. Guys like Medvedev, Wawrinka, and Schwartzman could be very tough outs, even against guys like Djokovic and Nadal. Those guys can only play defense for so long without as much spin on the balls to help them. Especially Nadal with all of his normal topspin and high bounces he relies on here.

Stan:
“The current conditions are an advantage for me. Slow and heavy, it’s good for my game. I have enough power to put weight in each ball. I know that if I play well, I can beat everybody”

Dan Evans:
"I think the balls are the biggest thing. Maybe they got it a little wrong. It's tough to get that ball to go anywhere. Some of those balls we were using, you wouldn't give to a dog to chew."

Medvedev:
“Me, I like the balls. Tennis is a fun and interesting sport. Sometimes one player doesn’t like something, but another player will like it. So far, I love it.”

If that is enough rain to suspend play multiple days, this tournament is in trouble, even with the roof on Chatrier. I think they have lights on most of the courts now, so at least they can play into the night.

Jack Sock got himself a win today. Tommy Paul is also through in straight sets.

Droopy Dawg plays Korda on Wednesday right?

Good eye. Yeah, they are probably up for Wednesday. My initial thought was to take Korda. But, Droopy is not bad at Roland Garros. I think he likes the extra time to hit groundies and he can handle high bounces. The junk conditions may hurt him a bit. Should be a decent match.

Obviously super early, but really solid start for the American men.

I'd like to take back anything positive I said about Felix in the US Open thread.

Medvedev down a set and a break already. So much for some of the bigger hitters

He must need better footing. Also, you need to be a strong beast like Stan to prevail in these conditions. Med sort of hits a bunch of floaters, then comes with the slap shot for a winner.

Sounds like you are correct. Thiem having to go through Stan and Schwartzman is even harder of a draw now, thanks to these conditions.

Anyone have stats on % of breaks for the men? Breaks all over the place this afternoon with Medvedev and Tennys's matches. Just wondering if the whole tourney has seen more breaks with the slow, low balls.

No stats here, but just watching the matches I would say yes.

Unless you're Opelka, of course.
