Ohio state is not even a top 1,000 offense in ncaa history

They are 100% a product of their awful schedule

Texas and Indiana, the only two teams they played, 24 total points

They are a good team that garnered mystique from beating a Florida team pretty bad.

Give them more credit than that. They absolutely obliterated their entire schedule and then humiliated the Gators who were at their peak under Spurrier. I don’t think their schedule was anything legendary, but they crushed everyone on it. They returned most everyone from their 1994 team that beat Miami for the NC.

Everything you said was true and at the time in 1995 I thought they were the greatest team I had ever seen but I was just trying to put focus on the "mystique" that goes on 30 years later. They were a really good team but their greatness mostly comes from that one game.

2019 LSU probably beats 95 huskers. But you have to measure a team’s dominance based on what they did in their era. 1958 LSU team was the national champion. Does that team beat the 2025 Kentucky team? That ‘95 huskers team beat 4 top 10 teams by an average of 30 pts. Their 3rd and 4th string RBs were averaging 8 yards per carry. We’ll never see that again.

They were good but young and not particularly physical. Pretty much the whole team returned with the addition of Bob Stoops the next year.

They lost most of the team, actually. 4/5 offensive linemen (including an Outland winner) and the FB who scored two touchdowns.

1995 Nebraska was a great team, but the biggest difference between them and many other teams of the Devaney/Osborne/Solich era was they played teams less prepared for their offense (physically and schematically).

They didn’t have to deal with prime OU anymore (5-12 against Switzer), their OOC opponents were shite (one even folded the program), and Florida didn’t have a front as physical as the FSU and Miami defenses (or coaches who had faced Nebraska before) that gave them fits for years (1-7 in bowl games against those two from 1983-1994). Even Bill McCartney (the only Big 8 coach to trouble Osborne at all other than Switzer) had moved on.

Literally every problem Osborne encountered from 1973-1994 was out of the way in 1995.

Per AI (ChatGPT):

quote:

When analysts blend modern advanced metrics (SP+, FPI, efficiency ratings) with historical dominance measures (point differential, strength of schedule, NFL talent produced, margin of victory), a small group of teams consistently emerge at the top. Below is the consensus shortlist from data analysts, statisticians, and historians — and the #1 team most commonly rated as the greatest single-season team ever.

?? #1: 2019 LSU Tigers Record: 15–0 Notable Wins: vs Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Clemson Titles: SEC + National Championship Why 2019 LSU is often rated #1 Modern metrics: #1 all-time SP+ offense Top-5 schedule strength ever measured 7 wins over top-10 teams — the most in history Joe Burrow produced the highest-rated QB season ever (QBR, EPA, PFF) Historical value dominance: Beat four top-5 teams by double digits Finished with 726 points, a modern-era record 14 players drafted, including 5 first-rounders Analysts often sum it up this way: ?? “No team has ever combined offensive efficiency and elite opponent strength like 2019 LSU.”

?? #2: 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers Record: 12–0 Dominance: average margin of victory +38.7 Title: National Championship Why 1995 Nebraska ranks top-2 SP+ retro-projections rank them as the most efficient team pre-2000 Beat four top-10 teams by 25+ points Offense averaged 399 rushing yards per game One of the few teams in history never challenged all season If LSU is the best “modern” champion, Nebraska is the best “pre-modern domination” champion. ??

#3: 2001 Miami Hurricanes Record: 12–0 Title: National Championship Why they’re historically unmatched in roster talent 38 NFL draft picks 17 first-rounders Defense allowed 9.8 PPG Beat No. 14 Syracuse 59–0 and No. 12 Washington 65–7 in consecutive weeks Miami may be the most talented team ever, even if their season wasn’t quite as statistically overwhelming as LSU or Nebraska.

?? Final Answer (Consensus Across Metrics + Historians) ?? 2019 LSU had the greatest college football season of all time. When blending: modern analytics (SP+, EPA, QBR) strength of schedule adjustments historical dominance quality of opponents NFL talent production …2019 LSU consistently ranks #1 across the largest range of objective measures.
