I remember this being a big topic last year. I loved him at ML 20-1 but that seemed to be a popular pick. He ran well in the Derby, but I’m not sure why he got steered back to turf. Maybe he was injured the past several months but he wouldn’t be a bad bet on Saturday at 7/2.

I’m excited to see what Mitole can do against a full elite field. He put away Whitmore in the Count Fleet, but that was basically a match race. Idk what he will do against a strong challenge for a lead with some G1 winners coming off the pace.

Can anyone explain why some races list a 1 and 1A?

Both horses are on the same betting line...is it a game time decision which one runs?

Nevermind google knows, for any of you low iq horse guys like me

If you see a #1 and # 1A, you get both of these horses for the price of one. This is called "an entry". Entries occur when two (or more) horses are entered which may have common ownership (or partial ownership) or the horses are trained by the same trainer. ... If you bet on a horse to win, the horse must finish first.

Does anybody remember how many horses you got back in the day when you bet the field? Was that in the 80s or 90s?

Or did I completely imagine it?

No, this was a different thing and offered at the tracks, not just whatever fancy betting things you use.

They’d take maybe 5 of the longest shots and lump them together in a “field” bet. So you’d get all 5 or so.

I think...

Maybe I should drink more

I’m not saying do it if he goes off at even money but if you want to place a bet to cover some of your other stuff, go big on mitole to place. Only way he gets beat is if somebody pressures him really really hard(don’t think they will) and Whitmore gets the dream trip from off the pace.

I think he will definitely get some pressure for the lead. There are a lot of horses in that race that love to get an early lead, most notably Promises Fulfilled. I'm planning on singling Mitole in my Pick 5 and Pick 6, but I don't think he is invincible. The only top class horse that Mitole has run against is Whitmore, and that was in a match race. In this race, he will have competition for the lead from a G1 winner and also have to deal with G1 winner and other quality horses coming from off the pace. While I think he is the best horse in the race, I can definitely see some scenarios where he doesn't win/place.

I don’t know why but I can’t seem to get as into the derby this year as usual. I’ve missed watching 4 morning works this week.

Only made it to the track once this winter.

It was everyone in field after the #11. So you got the #12,#13,#14,etc as part of the field.
