I think the point is it looked like it was over for Federer and Nadal. Meanwhile, Nole closed out four straight majors at Roland Garros, then Murray put the full court press on the last half of the year to get to number one. Now, it looks like Nole and Murray blew their wad to reach those accomplishments and the two GOATs are back running things in their old age.

Gotcha, that's what I was thinking. Even crazier after watching Fognini take care of Murray yesterday.

For your pleasure, pics of the Stadio Nicola Pietrangeli:

If Sharapova didn't get a WC, can she play her way in through the qualies or does she need a WC to play in the qualies?

I thought the decision was made a month ago that she doesn't get a wild card for the main draw, but is in qualies. I think that is the best decision. Don't let her in the main draw automatically, but boost interest in qualies (plus, I think she has had decent form recently to at least earn the qualies bid).

I might be wrong, but I thought they said no qualies either.

actually:

The French Tennis Federation wasn't even willing to her give a wildcard into French Open qualifying, which would have almost guaranteed that Sharapova would have reached the main draw.

Beautiful court. Mussolini had a penchant for architecture and violent fascism.

That's actually a significant step. Some decent guidance is the only thing that separates that guy from being ranked numero uno in the whole wide world.

Clearly I was incorrect, but I had thought that the points she'd accrued since being back put her ranking high enough to make the cutoff for the qualies draw.

Maybe she needed to win that final final in Stuttgart to get in qualies range.

Anyway, I disagree wit the Frenchies on this one. If I'm calling the shots, I'd give her the WC. The fact that she would almost certainly be the betting favorite to win the tournament is as far as the analysis needs to go for me.

Some questions for the crowd:

True or False: The Great Great Rafa Nadal wins both Rome and RG

The Great Great Rafa Nadal has swept the clay court season (defined as clay events he participates in between, and includin, monte carlo and RG*) ____ times?

If you filled in the blank with a whole number greater than zero, which years did he do it?

_____________
*this awkward definition has been brought to you by the fact that Madrid wasn't a clay event until 2009

All of this, plus guys like Thiem, Zverev, Goffin, etc. were just good young players. Now they are a threat to make the semis or finals of almost every tournament with a favorable draw. Also, Ferrer used to be a force on clay, and now he can't even beat mediocre players.

Just noticed that Isner has never won a title in anything above a 250 event. I know it's a very, very small chance, but he has a shot here at least. His toughest potential remaining path is Stan, Goffin, Raonic, Nadal. If Nadal makes this final, he can't have much left in the tank.

Querrey just had a match point on his serve for that same right to lose to Nadal. Thiem gets the honor.

Big John is through to the semis in a third set breaker. Props to cracka for predicting this run.

I don't think it was *that* unexpected.
