They got talent in expansion draft, they got to take on bad contracts for talent.

NO ONE has ever had this opportunity as a Expansion team, in any sport.

What was different about the expansion draft with Vegas than all the other expansion drafts? I didn’t think anything was changed about who could be drafted.

You would be wrong. There were 2 protection schemes for teams this year. Both allowed only one goalie protected with either 7 forwards and 3 defensemen OR 8 skaters. The 1998, 1999, and 2000 expansion drafts allowed 1 goalie, 5 defensemen, and 9 forwards OR 2 goalies, 3 defensemen, and 7 forwards. The 1993 expansion draft let teams only have the 1 goalie, 5 defensemen, and 9 forward option. In 1992, teams could protect 2 goalies and 14 skaters. Keep in mind that 1992 and 2000 also had 2 teams drafting, so they were splitting up draft picks from a worse pool.

Then I’m wrong. They still had to draft the right players. Good point about 2 teams drafting those years. But I don’t think those expansion teams in 1992, 1999, or 2000 drafted many good players at all. Vegas was fortunate that Penguins didn’t protect Fluery, but they’re scouting seems to be better than previous expansion teams.

They had much less to choose from. No previous expansion team had the chance to select 2nd line forwards or top 4 defensemen. Teams in he 1999 and 2000 drafts were also limited by restrictions placed about taking defensemen or goalies in repeat years. To put it simply, none of the players Vegas took would have been available under the old rules, so it didn't matter about the scouting department. Guys like Neal, Fleury, Marchessault, Smith, and Karlsson were no brainer choices. When you start getting guys of that caliber as obvious choices, you can then dig deeper to split hairs on which 3rd liner or 2nd pairing defenseman you want whereas every other team was trying to figure out which 4th liners and 3rd pair defensemen were better options than each other.

Ducks and Flames in a heated game on CBC. There was a good scrap near end of 2nd period. Ducks are playing dirty again.

Reimer and Bobrovsky put on a show in Columbus tonight, but Bob and the Jackets get the two points.

Little late, but the Stars smoked Edmonton 5-1 on Saturday. Finished up with 20 goals over 5 games on the long homestand. Hope the forced week off doesn't throw off the mojo.

The Blackhawks put Cody Franson on waivers. He's a right handed shot veteran D-man who makes about $1 million on a one year deal. He also is still pretty good at his job.

Pretty much any team that doesn't put a claim in for him is incompetent, not actively contending, or is in contract/cap hell.

Yeah the Blackhawks are just throwing stuff against the wall and hoping something works. They called up Jurco too.

Blues don’t play for another week after tonight. They have played the most games in the league, so it makes some sense to get a break, though a full week is awfully long. A very odd scheduling quirk.
