Well... can the Cajuns afford his buyout? Do they sit back and hope he has something else pop up like the ACT thing (yes I know there was nothing connecting him, but it was one of his coaches and could have been grounds for terminating the contract) and let him go in a few years when the buyout has decreased?

He's done better than any coach at the school has ever done. It's possible that he's reached the apex of what can be done there.

I don't mean it as a slight. ULL has to deal with the same shitty Louisiana politics that LSU does, with a fraction of the money flowing into the program.
Being in a lower tier conference also means you aren't getting the pick of the litter when it comes to recruiting, so you have to either be very good at evaluating talent or willing to take grade and character risks. And latter part comes with ongoing maintenance that sucks the life out of a coaching staff making the whole job harder.
Combine that with ULLs football history, lack of facilities, and apathetic fan base (at the time of Hud's hiring) and you can see that what he's done is borderline miraculous.
I'm kind of surprised that he still hits the Mississippi high schools and JUCOs as much as he does for recruiting even though I know that's his home turf. But even with all the talent in the surrounding areas of the school, it's hard to get guys eligible. Northside and Acadiana and Carencro and Breaux Bridge may all pump out athletes, but they're playing on 1.5 GPAs and no test scores most of the time.

They were cheating and he still couldn't win a outright Sun Belt Championship.
I'm not even sure the tie counts anymore being they had to vacate 8 wins.

Nelson Stokley put up some pretty good seasons during the Delhomme and Brian Mitchell eras. If you look at the schedule for those seasons, you could say his time in the late 80s and early-mid 90s had overall tougher opponents on average than what Hud now has.
Thing is, there were also a lot less bowl games to get invited to.

Right..because he's proven he can win at the level he recruits at, right? He's at least won 1 outright conference title, right? It's not like his program is slipping behind football programs that are 1 and 2 years removed from the FCS, right?

Here's why. Miles has in all likelihood already lost his job. That statement comes with 2 caveats: a) LSU loses to Moo St and/or Auburn and we see no change in the offensive philosophy. He may be gone mid-season. b) We win most of the games we should but still lose to Bama and there's no definitive change in the offensive philosophy over the course of the year, he's asked to retire at the end of the season.
Scenario B is almost certain. And it will be heartbreaking to watch....again this year, with this deep of a team, because one man is stubborn and too prideful to make changes.
But Les Miles is not coaching for his job against Jxville St. There's potentially 10 players on the LSU roster who will be drafted, they will win. But Jacksonville St obviously isn't intimidated by the big bad SEC. It will be closer than LSU fans like it, but it's a W. And Les' job isn't on the line tomorrow
I can't speak for ULL or a ULL coach, because I don't have a clue what's going on over there or care to

Hud is a program salesman and a motivator. I think it's evident he needs serviceable coordinators on both offense and defense in order to take his desired role as the hold the rope speech giver. Don't think you can plug him into any head coaching situation in the nation and he automatically wins.
All of that being said, I'm very grateful he became our head coach. I'm still happy to have him, but the coaching staff turnover has been less than desirable.
