That's not why no one threw the ball. The rules were different but it had nothing to do with what the DBs could do to the WRs. It had more to do with the shape of the football, the rules pertaining to passing the ball (in the 30s you were penalized for too many incomplete passes, for instance). Therefore, teams designed their offenses around the run game, not the pass game.
BTW, the dead ball era was from the mid 60s to the mid 70s

I will say that it was surprising how well they did that year following the death Jerome Brown. Didn't Randall Cunningham get hurt that year too?
I'd even throw in the 2013 Seahawks and 2015 Broncos D in there considering how slanted the rules are towards offenses these days in the NFL. Both of those D's carried their teams to a title.
Plus the Steelers had real tough defenses throughout the 70's.
plenty of defenses out there to stack up against that statement.

Next to the 1969 Kansas City Chiefs, the 1991 Philadelphia Eagles are the only other team to win the triple crown for defense IIRC: no. 1 total defense, no. 1 rush defense and no. 1 pass defense which I don't believe the 85 Bears, 2000 Ravens, 2013 Seahawks or the 2015 Broncos achieved. Also worth mentioning the 1991 Eagles were the best total defense by a factor of 400 yards over the second place team: the 1991 New Orleans Saints. The 1991 Eagles were no. 1 in creating turnovers, pass Y/A, rush TDs, and Y/C too. All accomplished against the 4th toughest offensive SOS that season to boot.
