Good night sweet prince.

SHREVEPORT, La. (KTBS) - The 117-year-old Shreveport Country Club, which has been operated by a non-profit affiliated with the Rev. Denny Duron for the past seven years, has closed. Managers of the west Shreveport country club said they would re-evaluate the operation and decide what to do with the property, which includes a golf course and clubhouse. The country club ceased operations on Monday. No reason was given.

Wow.

I remember going to hear Stan Humphries speak here when I was a kid.

We grew up members of East Ridge though. I suppose it and Southern Trace are still doing as well as ever?

They're doing ok. Wouldn't say well as ever though.

I remember loving SCC as a kid. Only place around you could find bent grass greens.

Why not open it as a public course and see what happens?

It's been open to the public, well semi-private, for at least 3 years

Damn. One of the few Louisiana courses with a golden age architecture pedigree... AW Tillinghast was the designer.. he also did Winged Foot, Bethpage Black, Baltustol, Newport, etc...wish there was the economic conditions to restore it.

Always liked SCC but this was a long time coming. No amount of money being poured into the club would fix the surrounding neighborhood. When you've got Eastridge, Southern Trace, or several semi-private clubs to play, why would you want to play a place where an armed security guard has to escort you down one of the holes b/c of multiple armed robberies from the bball court next door?

Damn. I liked that course. Played a tournament or two there as a junior.

Man looking at that course on Google maps helps me understand why it's closing. Not only does it look like crap, it's surrounded by it as well.

Makes me wonder how something like this hasn't affected Oakborne in Lafayette. It's surrounded by the finest citizens that Lafayette has to offer, yet it remains one of the nicest private courses around south louisiana.

Because it has an airport completely on one side so not surrounded by your choice of people.

This was inevitable. I worked there for 5 years. The surrounding neighborhood was just too much to overcome. The layout was charming, but outdated. The course was drowning in trees, which kept the conditions from being better. The shade and root issues kept the grass from growing properly. It really is a shame it turned out like it did.

They had some real money out there at one time. The best solution, to me, was to blow that place up and move the course to south Shreveport and start a "new" club with the same name that could have given Southern Trace and East Ridge a run for their money. There were the financial means (really rich dudes) to get it done, but they just kept wanting to revive or rescue something that just wasn't viable. Oh well, RIP SCC!

Totally. It felt you like were playing a Bushwood CC straight out of Caddyshack.

I learned how to play golf there. Location was terrible, hate to see it go. Think it's hole number 2 or 3 with the two ditches... some little Canadians in 2nd ditch were hiding and would steal our balls. And that was in 90's. Can't imagine how bad the neighborhood is now.

Yep. I played it only once. About 2 years ago. I noticed some fencing with razor wire at the top you'd find around a prison.

Shreveport area golfing numbers are on the decline. But it makes for great values for non members like me who rotate several public and semi private courses. My regular foursome rates them like this.

1. Cypress Hills, Waskom... Low rates, terrific views and variety of holes. Low traffic.

2. Crooked Hollow ... Always in good condition. Low rates, can get crowded because they host a lot of tournaments.

3. Northwood ... Low rates, my favorite in terms of views, no crowds...ever.

4. Huntington ... Over priced, challenging and opens early. We're finished at 9 a.m.

5. Olde Oaks .. Higher rates, you need a tee time, really nice course, very challenging. You will lose a lot of balls if you don't stay in the middle of the fairway.

6. Querbes .. Higher rates, very short course with no hazards so you can play with one ball. Tee off before 'The Gang of 16' arrives.

7. Barksdale AFB .. Low rates, visuals are bad. Leaves hiding your ball in the fairway are a problem in the Fall. Red ants are a problem in the summer.

8. Meadowlake .. Cheap as dirt and flat as a cow pasture.

9. Plain Dealing .. Cheaper than dirt and there is no dirt on the course. It's hard clay.
