Stage didn't really play out like I expected. Great ride by Turgis. I'm honestly impressed by Jonas, coming off that bad injury and not having Sepp and he's still right there.

Interesting comments from Remco. Not sure if this is just being honest or if these are comments better said on the team bus.

He says Jonas didn't have the balls for racing on Stage 9. Says he understands the decision but still seems to be a thinly veiled insult.

Calls out his team for not bringing him to the front as he desired.

Then says the motorcylces pulled Pogacar along via drafting and blocking the headwind, and that the race organizers may need to look at it.

Remco and Tadej had negative comments about Jonas after the stage. Jonas and Vismas tactics may be messing with their head.
Also, Jonas wasnt even on his bike for the last 100k and neither of them could seperate from him. Thats got to mess with their psyche a bit.

Team bus or in public, can’t help Jonas or his team to hear that the two most beloved racers in the peloton today will not work with or trust Jonas or his team under any condition or in any circumstance.

It kind of reminds me of the old days when Sagan would get into breakaways and nobody would work with him. Instead of racing to win they would race not to lose.

Here is Horner's take on Stage 9.
Good analysis. Talks about Matteo Jorgenson helping Jonas.
Some take-home points primarily at the end, cued up below.
He says the biggest priority was to get through the stage without problems and not lose time. Says Pogacar was a knucklehead by wasting energy and risking too much.
Said Remco was racing like an amateur.
Said Jonas was amazing and that a lot of people are out there saying he should have done more work but that there was no reason to do more than what he did.
Said Roglic was smart in how he rode and positioning his teammates etc.

Rest day thoughts on who everyone thinks wins the tour? I don’t have a data point that backs my pick, but I believe Jonas win a close tour. Just wanted to add that this kid Matteo Jorgensen has been impressive the whole year. America has a rider that could one day win a grand tour. ETA: He might have drop a couple of kg.

If Jonas wins, without Sepp and after that serious injury - it might be the greatest single grand tour moment in history, or at least since LeMond winning over Fignon in Paris with the time trial. Maybe I'm being hyperbolic and my memory of cycling history fails me, perhaps. Seeing Fignon collapse after finishing is an iconic scene. Felt bad for him but LeMond was beast. There's a rest day interview with Jonas that I'm about to watch and see what he has to say.

At this point though, it's hard for me to imagine anyone but Pogacar winning this TDF.

Audio isn't great but Jonas responds to Remco's comment about lacking balls and says he was riding smart.

I understand Remco and Pog calling out Jonas, but nobody was going to win the tour on stage nine. Why wouldn’t Vin wait to damage these guys on his terms? If Vin is holding on and improving, race them in the high mountains. He’s better there…

Yeah, Jonas is smart to wait. He's also been vocal about the gravel - he doesn't think it belongs in the TDF. I see his point. It's a road race.

ETA - Horner's latest video is up, for the rest day. Says Remco "doesn't know how to race with his brain". We might get some additional drama in this TDF if people keep trading barbs. He also said that Remco's comments about Jonas not having balls could come back to hurt Remco later if he needs some help from Jonas.

It isn’t a road race. It’s a bike race. Gravel and cobbles have been a part of the TdF since the beginning. Just as the high mountains have been. There is a contingent out there that claims that gravel and cobbles are just spectacle or novelty - forgetting entirely that Le Tour itself is just a spectacle. No surprise that a 100 pound pip squeak (Horner) who would get spit out the back of a Cat 3 crit would prefer to exclude gravel or cobbles. Or argue that racers attacking their rivals at the best possible point to gain time was boneheaded or amateur.

If Jonas winds up in a situation where he feels like it's in his best interest to work with Remco, he'll probably work with Remco.

Remco said after the TT that he doesn't expect to win the overall so he's probably got more freedom to burn matches but if Pog keeps racing like it's 1973 he could get himself in trouble as Jonas gains strength.
