I left this forum for 3 years after being banned for some political comment and the only reason I came back was because of all the threads asking where I was. I'll just go back to lurking it seems I've rattled a few too many regular joes

Before you go, give me an answer about cashews please.

I don't want to emasculate you or anyone else any further Iowa golfer

This guy is something else.
Know what I've learned over time? If you have to brag online about what you have, and what you make, especially in an effort to "prove" something, you are trying to compensate for something. And in this case, bragging to a guy who reached out to the money board to discuss his financial situation about the car he's renting demonstrated to me that this guy is trying to compensate for being a run of the mill a-hole.
But he's got money...and gas stations...so we should just lay off. Perhaps he's the one that's too sensitive.

Big fella how old are you, just curious?

Well he admitted to just being a troll, then tells me I'm upset when I ask him to troll elsewhere

What's funny is I really don't post much. I only read the thread because of the title and the OPs story matched my own in many ways. So I feel for the guy and wish him the best.
And then mr gas station man rolls in telling him to nut up, calling out his wife and then letting everyone know how rich he is, at the same time ragging on the OP for having kids before he'd made every single decision he ever intends to make...maybe he should go back to lurking.

Dr edge it's ok man, me posting the pic of my car to shut you up really got you. Maybe one day if you work hard you too can accomplish that not a big deal that I have seemingly accomplished. I love how deep inside your head I got today. Does it bother you that I'm a complete jerk off and yet life has rewarded me with so much to the point that it flusters you beyond anything you can imagine that I can blow $3k a month on a 400 mile a month car that I don't even own? That car is made for people with more ego than brain and you can certainly tell I fit the bill and am loving every second of how upset it gets you.

I just wanted to know if you liked cashews almost to the point of addiction like I do.
FWIW, I have no issue with you, or your car.

You even stated earlier this business was gift wrapped for you as an inheritance. Your uncle did the grunt work...
You've said more than once you'd go back to lurking. I think multiple folks are wondering exactly when the hell that's gunna happen since you haven't added anything to the thread for the last 4 pages.

dabigfella
1) Stringedinstruments, you definitely did the right thing by going back home.
2) hungryone is absolutely right. A master's in English (even at Princeton) won't do much to further your career. The field is simply too crowded. Even PhDs are having trouble landing decent jobs, and tenure is quickly becoming ancient history even for them.
2b) Education is changing rapidly. You don't know what higher Ed will be in 20 years. The only person who can afford to get a PhD (again master's isn't enough) is a late 20s single person whose family is independently wealthy...maybe dabigfella's future daughter.
3) If you still want to try higher ed, get a damn Master's at auburn or Alabama by taking night or online classes as you teach high school. I promise you, the pricey market is NOT worth moving your family to attend a prestigious school. Follow that with another in state or nearby PhD program.
4) I believe you made this decision based on university prestige, which sounds typical of a fellow liberal arts/humanities person...potential career advancement is NOT worth the risk in this age. Cush professor jobs are nearly a thing of the past.
5) I read a stat the other day driving home from Montana (because I'd like to move west). Adjuncts comprise EIGHTY Percent of Colorado community college faculty. And you can bet your arse that ALL of those folks hold Master's degrees and half or more, PhDs. For those that don't know, adjuncts work their arse off for about 20k per year.
Needless to say, I feel extremely grateful to have a public school job at a great high school.
6) dabigfella: that's what it looks like to give helpful advice ^^^

Congrats on leasing a luxury car!!!! Everyone is so proud of you!!!! The next time I hit up the gas station ATM I'm going to pay that $2.75 and think of you and the 1/3 of a mile you can drive in your leased car.

It doesn't bother me, but the fact that I am not Impressed by your inheritance certainly seems to bother you.
And you called yourself a jerkoff, not me.

You mean to tell me I made more money working at GameStop than a pre-school teacher makes? Yikes, that's bad.

Also, I haven't really read too much of the thread but if dabigfella is financially sound, maybe ask for advice? I mean, I'd be willing to study under the wing of someone driving a Rolls Royce.

You have to get a hold of yourself and calm down. You got into a top tier program and rightfully, should be proud of this accomplishment. The monetary gains will come to you once you're finished with the program. The clear objective of receiving an advanced degree is putting off immediate gratification for long term earning power. It will pay off. You'll have much more firepower to negotiate a top tier offer with your graduate degree, keep your focus on long term goals and the money will come in time.

There is no guarantee that a Master's degree from even an Ivy League school will pay off. He'd have to get a PhD too...at least FIVE more years of intense work. And even with the PhD there's no guarantee!
The field is saturated, and tenure is disappearing.

Jeebus I saw this had over 100 posts in a day - which is insane for MT - and I thought this guy must have been getting some great advice. I tune in to find a few good posts and mostly a bunch of inane arguments that doesn't even involve the OP.
Y'all need to take that garbage to the OT.
To the OP... you have come to this board several times asking for help and advice and really laid bare a lot of things. You are like a lot of people in this country - college educated, wanting the best for your family, but just seemingly unable to get a real positive flow going. I feel for you.
I take it that you decided to leave the grad school program. I know that was a tough decision but it's best to make that decision now.
I'm no apostle of Dave Ramsey by any means but one of the things I have seen him talk about - and I agree with him - is that personal finance is like 90 percent personal and 10 percent finance. A lot of your issues are more personal than finance, if we are being truthful. I've learned - the hard way - that you and your spouse needs to be on the same page and both fully committed in these situations.
Good luck with the move back home.

Most preschools pay horrible, people work there because they love working with the kids.

^^listen to this guy. This whole life crisis moment isn't really about money at all. It's about finding the life that makes you happy....you're not guaranteed 40 or 50 more years. Don't spend the prime of your life chasing a dream that isn't yours. Don't chase money; build the life that works for you & your spouse & kids. Happiness cannot be bought.
