Well if the tax rate changed to be 100% after your first $400K of income that would be pretty damn relevant don’t you think?
Obviously an extreme example but you need to consider what you think your tax rate is now vs later.

Not sure why he hates it. The most important part of retirement savings is pushing the money in. I prefer the pre-tax option because of current tax rate, but you can’t go wrong with either option. Pile in the money and watch it grow.
