Is the etf GLD the way to go or is it better to purchase physical bars?

What do you want to do with it? What's your reason or goal for buying it? How long do you intend on holding the position?

I currently own $GOLD and have silver bullion. You can play it both ways. I plan on holding the bullion forever.

I have a good bit of cash now and about 20K in the market. Would like to hedge my investments and USD with gold before I try to buy a house next year. I just feel gold is probably the safest bet to put some of my cash into that will leave me with liquid assets mid/end of 2021 to buy my first house. I do also like the outlook of gold with upcoming stimulus.
I could put all of my cash in the market but I'm a bit worried of upcoming volatility .

Why would you feel this way? Why would gold be “the safest” way to keep your assets liquids for less than a year? Gold can be volatile (the price can go up or down relatively quickly and somewhat unpredictably). And depending on how you buy, there can be costs associated with buying/selling that would make it less than ideal for what you want to do.
Sounds like you need a money market fund. Or short term CDs or cash equivalents.

The precious metals PR team are damn good at what they do. There are numerous ways to protect assets better than gold. There are numerous ways to make money better than gold. There are numerous reasons not to own gold in general.
