not a sage. just an applicator of very sound logic.
you never responded to my lottery scenario. If you win the powerball for $200 million. Are you automatically upper class because you have that money?
Would you be accepted by upper class families as one of their own? Would you be allowed to marry an upper class family daughter or mingle at upper class functions and clubs?
Probably not. You don't have the education and background becoming for the class. You might not dress or speak the right way. You don't have the same tastes.
In short, you would not be one of them. You haven't shown the ability to sustain your wealth. You may be able to earn/buy your way into their good graces, but just having the money doesn't get you invited to the parties.
So it can't be primarily monetary now can it?

700K is rich.
You are saying "Rich = Upper Class". I am saying that it doesn't necessarily equate. Because I say "Someone with Great Wealth = Upper Class".
You are deducing that Rich = Great Wealth. You are wrong.
Are you able to see my posts? Can someone confirm that they are seeing my posts? Is this thing on?

Upper Class = Elite = Rich and Powerful =
I think that's a short-sighted definition.
To me Upper Class= Able to sustain wealth with regard to their immediate community.

Upper class divides into 2 bracnes
Rich
Elite
Rich- you would fall into this category making 700K a year
Elite- you wouldn't fall into this category making 700K a year
You're trying to tell me that someone that makes 700K a year is middle class. That is absurd

Which would obviously mean that in most places 700K would imply that you're upper class

I've never seen anyone actually try put a number on "rich".
Come on now. you can do better than that.

That's because it's relative to the cost of living
The original question asked specifically about LA
If you make 700K a year in LA, you're rich

it might imply that you're upper class, but it wouldn't prove it.
that's the whole point.

Powerman, if the dude made $700,000/year but had $20,000,000 in the bank, he would be upper class.
Being rich does not mean you have great wealth. Nowhere in your posts did you support your opinion that being rich makes you in the lower upper class. Please re-read that passage you quoted. Watch for the phrase "great wealth".

I'd say that was "High Income", not rich. Hell, we've all heard of high paid athletes and entertainers who are bankrupt in short order. If you have high income, but high expenses on non durable items, you are NOT rich.
hence, my "ability to sustain wealth" theory.

But you're just stating that spending habits determine whether or not you're rich
If you're under the assumption that you have good spending habits, then it's pretty clear to see that making 700K a year in LA will make you a rich person. You don't even need to be an exceptional investor. 700K a year is enough room for some rather unwise investing as long as you don't spend it like a drunken sailor on items that give you low rates of return.

Which is subjective of course

so basically, it has nothing to do with income but rather income-expense ration.
See my post about "sustaining wealth" and also my net worth post.. yeah that's right. ok

Somewhat
But if you make 700K a year, it's a safe bet that in MOST areas your income will far outweigh your expenses unless you're just terrible with money.

Please re-read that passage you quoted.
And you can re-read the passage YOU quoted that stated that the upper 5% of wage earners are considered upper class.
700K probably puts you close to the top .5% so even if it was an error that was off by a factor of 10 as you claim, you'd still be wrong.

Powerman, I have never seen you get powned like you are getting powned in this thread. You have yet to provide any source backing your opinion. Every source you have cited has further strengthened my position. Is this how all of your debates on this site are?

so since in this thread, we're looking for a definitive characteristic that denotes a person being "upper class in Louisiana"
and there are circumstances where any amount of income could result in a person still not being upper class,
Then income can not be used as definitive indicator of someone being upper class.
(which you've been trying to say this entire post. And you've even gone as far as to give that income a number)

Um,you and karma are the only people that believe this idiocy
I'll take my brain over both of yours combined on anything that pertains to math and logic
Thanks

I have a feeling that there are some dejected people reading this thread right now. When they first clicked on it, they thought they were upper class or had a shot at upper class. Now, they will lie in bed tonight and have to face the reality that they are just middle class schmucks.

Check the last one out Chickie. No citing or anything.
Just clear and unarguable logic.
