Upper class is a different class. A different class infers different total lifstyle than the people in another one. If you don't have to work a day in your life that is a totally different lifestyle that the people who do. I have two friends in BSL that don't work, but they just bought a $750k house, and a $200k boat. The husbands only job is to manage his charity. That is a different lifestyle than my friend who works his butt off for $700k/yr. Totally different. Just like me being able to afford a $300 dinner for my wife's 30th birthday. To a 'low' class person, that is totally not part of their lifestyle. I see class difference as lifstyle difference. Face it, if you make $100k a year, or you make $500k a year, you still live a similar lifestyle, just in a nicer setting. I may not be able to afford a country club membership, but I can afford to go play golf.

I think one can differentiate between trust fund babies and the upper class. They are not co-extensive.
And if you made 700K a year you could easily set aside a nice trust fund for your children
I'm 26
If I make 700K a year for the rest of my life I'd be rich
By the time I was 30 I could live in a million dollar house that is paid off and everything after that is going into investments. By the time I'm 50 I'm probably looking at 8 figures
If that's not upperclass, then I don't know what is

But the point of the passage was that upper class equals elite.
My point is upper class doesn't equal elite
You're not upper middle class if you make 700K a year
You're upper class

And 157K and up still puts you in the top 5% which I would consider to be upper class
Maybe if you're single. My wife and I together are in about this range. Throw in 4 kids, house note, 2 car notes, student loans and this is a long long way from upper class. Don't get me wrong, we live a comfortable life, but upper class??? No way. I can't even afford to put the damn pool in that my wife keeps pestering me about.

Sorry
That refers to household income
You're in the top 5% of wage earners, like it or not

Find me a definition that backs up your opinion...I have already cited the opinion of two well-known sociologists.

Upper class means owning two homes.
Upper class means private schools.
Upper class means not having to work past 55.
Upper class means gated neighborhood.
You can do all of that if you're earning $250k+/year.

Let me simplify this a little. Ask yourself if Pacman Jones is upper class or just rich?

Come live my life and pay my bills and look at the checking account balance everyday and see if you still think I'm upper class regardless of what that chart says. Again, I'm not poor mouthing. Upper middle class??? Definitely. But to me and most others, upper class is a whole other level. Upper class is not even thinking about the balance in the bank, b/c you don't have to.

Agreed. I make just over 6 figures, and live pretty comfortably. If I made 700K I wouldn't know what to do with the money

The definition of the upper class YOU provided says that they are in the top 5% of wage earners
250K on up puts you into the top 1.5%
You're saying that 700K makes you upper middle class and not upper class
You're pulling a SFP here and arguing for the sake of arguing

The elite is merely a subset of the upper class
If you want to refer to the elite as the upper class then there has to be another class in between upper middle and upper class (which you believe to be the elite)
But there is no way that you can file people who make 700K a year anywhere into the middle class

You're in the top 5% of wage earners. You might be rich but you're well above the middle class as far as income distribution is concerned

powerman- i am glad to see you have managed you tone a little better. you were on very thin ice.

I admitted that the % is wrong, and should be corrected. But read the text...it has nothing to do with income level.
I hope you didn't have aspirations of being upper class one day...

Powerman, I am still waiting for you to link to a page that backs up your opinion...and please hurry...that Jeopardy music is freaking annoying.
