And what happens if the final offer falls through as described in the OP?
I have changed positions more than once in my career, and every time I let my current employer know I was leaving the first opportunity after I had made the decision to accept the new position. There were never any negative consequences for advising the employer, and I have remained on good terms with all former employers treated in this manner.
