If you have good credit and a decent income, I'd look into a personal line of credit or a HELOC. You can find a HELOC for 1.99% most likely but definitely under 3%. You may be able to do a regular line of credit for under 4% I don't know.

Point being, at your age and likely income you probably have some good options outside of just the student loan people as their rates are meant more for people in their 20s with poor credit from college.

PenFed has apparently gotten into the student loan refi world. Check them out too.

Yeah, credit and income are not an issue. However, I want to keep the debt off of me. You know as well as I do women are nuts and I don't want this debt on me if something happens. I plan on having this thing paid off in around two years or sooner.

I think we may go with BRD or sofi and just pay the shite out of it.

I hear you, but you've been married for 13 already and theoretically you assumed that debt upon marriage anyway. If you pay it off in 2 years than interest won't be a huge deal.

I would definitely make her cut some corners until its paid off though, no more girls trips, no new car, etc.

I assumed because it was debt incurred prior to marriage it would be separate property. I guess technically the debt was acquired by the father and the transfer into her name would be after marriage so it may be mine anyway. Interesting.

Penfed looks pretty good too.

Solid marriage, hate to break it so you but that debt is yours too regardless of if you co-sign.

Assets and liabilities acquired prior to marriage are separate property, no? As mentioned above this case may be different because of transfers.

BTW, I met a man at a wedding this past weekend that had his wife leave him after over 50 years of marriage.

Does your wife teach in a title 1 school by chance? If so, the student loan forgiveness program would be right up your alley especially if the loan has been kept current

Damn right they are. I'd be mad as hell at the FIL for withholding that information. Your wife might not know any better but he should.

I assume you got some kind of confirmation that this money was actually used on your wife's education and not to build a boat launch or something, right?
