Reallocating my ira’s with my advisor. Settled on a west end fund (60/40) and she asks if I want to add an individual stock sleeve to that mix or keep as is. What does that mean? TIA

She is asking if you want to reduce the amount of the equity fund/ETF you are investing in order to buy some individual stocks to pair with the equity fund/ETF. No offense, but asking this question likely means you should stick with funds/ETFs only.

Let’s say you have 30% allocation to large cap core equity. 10% could be a position in IVV and 20% could be a “sleeve” which holds individual stocks. That sleeve would more than likely be a SMA managed by a third party (unless your advisor has their own proprietary strategy). That managed sleeve will usually come with a fee but it is actively managed and you actually own the shares of stock.

Why didn’t you ask her?
I’m not being a smart arse - I’m genuinely curious.

ETA- that WestEnd strategy has likely underperformed its benchmark by nearly 2% per year for the last decade (net of fees). You may want to consider another advisor.

Should have borrowed the line from the movie Margin Call and ask her to speak to you as if you were a young child or Golden Retriever.
