So You Have to Know People Now In Order to Connect on LinkedIn?

If so, then that sucks for meeting potential new employers.

Seems like every time I try to make a new connection I have to have shared work history or I have to enter their email address.
Is this some kind of setting on their end?

No, you either got locked by LinkedIn bc you added too many people who declined and then reported you or you are just requesting people who have high privacy settings.

Must be this then because I've rarely tried to add anyone until recently. I wonder if this is the default setting now or something.

I had it happen recently too
Wasn't sure what was up

One setting I wish they would change is not allowing anonymous people to view your detailed profile. They should HAVE to show up for you to view if they view you. I hate getting "anonymous has viewed your profile"

Doesn't premium access give you the ability to know their identity?

I almost never view anyone's profile because I don't want them to know I'm looking

I learned that one the hard way.

Nope, it will always show up as "anonymous viewed your profile" with no link to click.... If they make it truly anonymous, it can stay that way. However, if you have the premium or recruiter corporate accounts and you do a search and their profile comes up in the results, to where you can see very limited data, you have credits to unlock them.

Just go change your settings and they won't be able to tell... There's three privacy settings
Open (can see everything)
Semi (shows up as "a person in x industry viewed your profile)
Closed
If you do the semi though, all people have to do is click on the description and it will prop up 15-20 people with similar titles and you're one of them. If the person knows of you in any way, they can easily tell who it was.

I do the same thing

I have mine on closed. The flip side is that I can't see who views my profile either. But I don't really care.

Do you have to be logged in to LinkedIn in order for them to know that you are viewing their profile?
Posted on 10/3/14 at 1:36 am to shutterspeed
LinkedIn isn't Facebook or Myspace.
If you are using it for professional purposes why should you be concerned with who knows when you view their profile?
Fully agree they should take capability of being anonymous away.

Good question, I am actually not sure on that one. I don't know if people who aren't actually logged into linkedin show up under "Who has viewed your profile" or if they just go under the radar
btw, there are TONS of tricks to get around certain privacy settings. If you come across someone who has the detail info locked and you can only see first name, last initial and maybe title.... Go to Google and do a google search and click on the linkedin result that comes up. 90% of the time, it backdoors into their full profile

Besides the jobs posted, I still can't figure out the point of LinkedIn.

I will tell you how to add those people, groups.
Find out what groups the person you want to connect to and then join the same group. then once in the group, you can add them.
And in general, linkedin prompts you to provide an email address under one of three circumstances
1) you are thought potentially to be abusing linkedin services, i.e. spammer
2) you have tried to add that person recently and they ignored your request.
3) the person you are requesting has required it to be the case
I am sure there are some other cases for this but in general this is what I was told by linkedin. I had a guy (quit) doing social selling training for me, and connections were a big thing.
