Atkins said if the rule change is approved, it will be left to companies to decide whether they switch to semiannual or stay with quarterly.

“For the sake of shareholders and public companies, the market can decide what the proper cadence is,” he said.

Current regulations require companies to report earnings on a quarterly basis,

I'm good with it. Saves the companies money.

I only want this change if investment firms are no longer allowed to proxy for their investors by default. Over the last decade we've seen "fiduciary duty" be bent to the point where they are used to push social issues which often aren't good business practices. At the very least the proxy aspect should be defaulted to the investor, with the option of allowing the firm to be their proxy (but can be revoked/reinstated at any time).

I don't mind this. The current quarterly reporting requirement puts small businesses at a disadvantage. They can not position for the long term if they have to keep showing a quarterly profit.

A company that can't simply report their numbers once a quarter without changing strategies/CEO's isn't a company that I would want to invest.

I don't consider publicly traded companies small businesses. I prefer more transparency with companies I decide to invest in; although I imagine most of the S&P 500 will continue with quarterly reporting

C-suite reward structure, not cadence of financial reporting, is the culprit.

Short-term focus is a limiter. Been with my company for over 30-years. In hindsight, it’s “long term” strategy was really at least ten 3-year strategies as per bonus structure of top 5% in company, that rewarded in 3-year horizons

Some serious share buy backs influenced by this thinking as well.

Quarterly reporting causes short term thinking. I support this.

Having worked in the earning process for a publicly traded company, this would be great. I felt like 3-4 weeks of each quarter were wasted just working on earnings/board materials. It was a giant time suck for probably 30-40 people in my division, and my division of the company wasn’t even particularly important compared to the main division of the company which the company is known for.

Having that time back to do literally anything else would have allowed us to achieve more things.
