Raising tariffs can be done, but it needs to be extremely targeted and balanced against tax and/or regulatory cuts for domestic producers in that category. The idea behind any tariff increase should be to push domestic production expansion. Along with this, increases would need to be slow and gradual rather than just spike them up.

All that said, this isn't the time for tariff increases. What we need now are regulatory cuts in energy and food production as well as the federal government cutting total spending (not just the growth of spending).
