I am guessing u have cash rewards then a travel rewards card. Of those two choices which ones are the best?

I fly southwest a lot and have a chase bank account.

Gonna be spending about $20k on home improvements and thought I would take advantage. I have a Bank of America NASCAR card which I never use with a 10k limit with the least history, discover card that has cash back that I use sometimes with a $5k limit and my low interest card with my credit union. I have had that one for 20 years. Was thinking of canceling the Bank of America card or just keep it and add another card.

Get the Soutwest card. They have some nice point promotions throughout the year.

In addition to anything you get, add the Pen Fed Cash Back Rewards card. 5% back on gas YEAR round.

If that is important to you... I'd get the Southwest card.

If not Chase Sapphire preferred has the best sign up bonus and you get 2 points per dollar spent on travel and dining

Another solid option is Amex Gold premier. 25k sign up bonus with 3 points per dollar on air travel and 2 points per dollar on gas and groceries

Since you went with Southwest (presumably for the 50K signup bonus) you should also get the business card for another 50K bonus when the bonus goes back up to 50K (just keep an eye out for when it moves back up). The reason for this is sign up bonus counts towards the 110,000 point companion pass which allows a companion to fly free the rest of this year and all of next. You can change companions up to 3 times. I signed up for the personal and business card on the same day and got approved for both. So I got 100,000 points plus the 4,000 points I got for the minimum spend. I transferred Hyatt points (5000 Hyatt = 2400 southwest points) to get to the 110,000 requirement. Now I can use the companion pass an unlimited amount of times the rest of this year and all of next. Just something to keep in mind.

The other best cards right now are the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the Chase Ink Bold / Chase Ink Plus business cards.

You don't have to have a business to get the business cards. Just use your social in the tax id number. I won't get into the ethics of that but I know a bunch of people do it and just say they have a consulting business.

I have the Chase Sapphire Preferred (SP) and the Platinum AMEX. Both are great cards. SP annual fee is free for the first year and it has a direct relationship with Southwest, so that would work out well. AMEX comes with a $500 annual fee, but it is a great card if you travel. Last week I stayed in one of their preferred hotels, in NOLA, and I received a free room upgrade to a suite and $150 in free food credit. If you travel enough, you will get your fee back in no time.

Dang Weaver you just missed out on double the bonus. But I have been successful many times by contacting Chase through your online message center and telling them about the 50K promotion and telling them you feel like you didn't get the best deal. They usually will bump you up to the bigger bonus.

if you do online purchases from Home Depot or Lowes, or if you have the time to start doing some, you can always get 5%, sometimes 10% cashback on your Discover. When I have a big project I am planning, or when I buy a new tool that is 100 or more, I order online and do in-store pick up. You have to plan to do this though, otherwise, it will just slow you down.

That stinks. I got 50,000 when I signed up for SW visa a while back.

I put about $15K in home remodeling expenses on a rewards card several years back. I think I ended up with around $500 in Ruth's Chris gift cards after that. It was good eating, but I now know that the travel rewards are a much sweeter deal.

I like the hotel rewards cards - I stick with Marriott and it has paid off big and small:

Received 50,000 sign up bonus

Received a free night stay

Have been room upgraded twice already

Using the elite check in is very nice and you can check out an hour later if needed.

I travel a good bit for work - but I stick with one brand and make it work. I see immediate tangible benefits from the program (room upgrades)....and I like that.

Apples to apples there are better deals out there - but I like the personal service I receive from the hotel brand and the free nights are nice when traveling with the family.

Be careful of signing up with a card with a specific airline partner. I had Amex Delta for a couple of years, but am cancelling this year. When trying to travel with points, they cut way down on your available flight pool so it's hard to get a decent flight, not to mention I was stuck with Delta.

I switched to Cap 1 Venture - double miles for everything - and a simple reimbursement for travel expenses when you want to cash in on your points. So not only can you fly any airline, but no decreased flight pools or anything - just book a flight like you normally would then get reimbursed afterwards.

if you actually stay @ Marriott properties a lot (like Marriott Platinum status), it is hard to beat that card.

For travel rewards, the Barclaycard Arrival preferred card. Best travel card out there. Google it.

I just opened one and it will be my new primary card over my Amex.

Double points on everything, $100 for every 10k points, a 10% points refund when used for travel, and can be redeemed in $25 blocks.
