Oh great post---I've been thinking the same. Something about making it scalable based on some HR software criteria.

Depending on your industry, it can hugely beneficial. In general though, I think having a service clean it up and review it can’t hurt. They’re not very expensive, and you can always use what you have if you don’t like it.

The services excel at hitting the key words and optimizing the resume against the HR Algorithms that sort them. In theory, it should get your resume in front of more eyes. The guys I know who used them ended up with some unique looking and wordy resumes. I was not a fan of the resume or how it looked, but it got results.

As for Headhunters, also beneficial IMO. They can also bypass the HR system and get you in front of prospective employers.

They also don't cost you anything, so why not?

Is that coming back I to style? The last time I was looking for a position (15 years ago...) hiring managers wouldn't even accept resumes over a page and a half or so. If it had a third page it went straight in the trash.

We utilize recruiting services. About 25% make it with our company. Can’t stand wasting money with them. Folks who are with placement companies generally were not great employees in the first place.

We hired an internal recruiter. She is constantly searching for talent. The folks she finds (they generally aren’t looking for jobs) have a 75% chance of staying with us. We entice them to join since we have better incentives, pay more and bonus well.

Point is to have your name out there on social media sites, constantly update your work history and be willing to listen when an opportunity comes available.

Good luck.

I can't fit all the different pertinent projects and positions I have had on one page. I have been told more technical details are needed for the positions I am interested in. I have worn many hats so there are some positions that are in between the ones that need detail and just listing them eats up space.

Currently employed but not in what I want to be doing.

Resume services can absolutely be worth the time. As others pointed out, if you are not happy with the result; you can stick with your own or tweak there's. Another option would be to apply with either theirs, or your original. After a few days if you don't get a bite, submit the other resume. If you use a different e-mail account/login, they are unlikely to see you applied twice.

Headhunters are generally free to the prospective employee. Just make sure it's not an exclusive arraignment, where you are forced to apply for all jobs through them. There are companies that won't consider an applicant through a headhunter because they don't want to pay the fees. When I was last looking, I was working with 5 different services and they all knew it and told me it was customary in my industry (accounting)

It can certainly be beneficial there. However, based on some of your later responses, it may be better to tailor the resume you use to apply to the job requirements. You don’t need to list ALL your accomplishments/responsibilities, just the pertinent ones for the role you’re applying.

I would certainly advise against more than 2 pages. 1 is ideal, 2 is acceptable if you have significant experience, 3+ is a never.

Two of my buddies used Storyline Resumes. One guy (engineer in O&G) did just the resume service, which involves an interview, template selection, and reviewing prospective/potential job interests. This allows them to tailor the resume to the roles you’re applying. The other (in sales) used the resume service and also allowed them to build his Social Media profiles (primarily LinkedIn).
