Damn. So what do you think about the HP outlook?

HP is a little tougher for me to analyze off the cuff because they have so many damn product lines that it really creates some diversification within its own firm. I do know that the HP TouchPad is a bit of a flop, so I wouldn't expect any major growth from the tablet arena for them.

I am still not sure I feel about the Palm acquisition. WebOS is a good platform but it is quickly moving the direction of being obsolete to your average consumer. Android and iOS growth along with the beginning emergence of Windows Phones puts WebOS in a tight spot. I just don't see HP being able to really utilize that software platform with the other players in the market.

I don't really know enough about where HP is looking to grow its business. I am betting it has some annuity type contracts with corporate clients but that is a hard area to see strong growth. I still think Dell has a good hold on the colleges market (not the laptops students buy, but the computers around school) so I don't see that as an opening.

It is one of the industry leaders in printing but is that really a growth segment? I don't know shite about that forecast for the market

Which brings me back to the growth segments of smartphones and tablets....I just don't see it as HP/Palm being able to penetrate that market successfully given its current platform and late entry.

Anyone else have some thoughts? I am sure I missed some things.

ETA: I think it would be really cool for HP to implement the WebOS system into its printers. I don't know if they are doing that yet or have plans to do it, but I think that would be one intriguing way to add some interesting functionality and abilities to the printer market. At the very least, it would add a nice, smoother UI for its printers.

Worst comes to worst, they can always just jack up the price of ink cartridges since they practically own the market. When you need ink you aren't going to Amazon to get it for a few dollars cheaper.

The other interns at this relatively small advisory/IB have been in at 9 and leaving at 9 every day I've been there. No one looks miserable though, its a very chilled out environment, which I find completely different from public accounting. One chick is 21 (yes, hot) and I feel like she's already ahead of me in career terms. I feel so inferior.

My standard days have been 8-6 with maybe a 20-30 minute lunch. I don't mind it though as I have a lot of freedom with my work. I could never do audit or tax.

I personally think they bought PALM and acquired WebOS essentially as an option. Let's take a shot and see if we can make it work. If we can build a base we have huge potential, if we can't, we lose a billion on the purchase + whatever we lose in development costs, because I'm sure they realized that Win7 tablets were a long way from viability at the time. I think they'll eventually abandon WebOS and just roll with Windows tablets and gain some growth there, but just like every body else, it will come at the expense of some of their other commercial business (laptops). That might be as much cannibalization as it is just simply transition to the "post-PC" world over the course of the next decade or what have you.

No one here takes lunch, they roll down the elevator to the tunnels, pick up something, and come back up and eat at their desk while they work. But, at least where the interns/analysts sit, its an open floor plan, so you're basically just eating lunch together while working, so its not bad at all.

The freedom/openness of work here is more or less what I meant as opposed to PA. PA every one was always hustling trying to find work, making sure they were chargeable all the time, which often times seemed really disorganized and hodge podge and generally inefficient because people would just grab whatever work they could. Here, every one is on a team and have legit mentors, everyone knows they are working long hours and large projects, but knowing that seems less stressful because you're not constantly worrying about "what am I going to do in 3 days." The associates/VPs/MDs are all actively involved in actually teaching the analysts stuff and genuinely seem to care, and they're not sitting there freaking out about taking an hour out of the day to teach people stuff because they know they're going to be there till 9 anyway. From an entry level standpoint, the difference is light and day.

You have worked three 20+ hour days? Ouch.

I think finding new work can be stressful in PA but if you have the right mentor then it can make things much, much easier. You really have to perform at a high level and become the associate that everyone wants on the team so that you don't have to worry about chargeability. Probably easier said than done.

Yeah, I mean you're in a much better environment anyway in a B4 for sure. Part of the issue with smaller firms is they don't have the time or resources to effectively manage their people. I found that to be the case and thought it was a large part of the reason they let me go, and that was confirmed by a friend the other day who said "I think we're all following you out the door, its just poorly managed."

You crazy brah, but you got to bust arse to keep beating GS and UBS in those energy league tables. Have not heard from your peeps yet, figuring/hoping they're just busy with earnings this week, as I haven't heard from my other contact there either.

I'm usually in at 9:30, then leaving the office by about 7:30 or 8:00.

I do take a good 45 minutes for lunch though so it's a good break during the day.

How does your workflow work? I'm just twiddling my thumbs at the moment, we're waiting on info from the client, but its the first time I've been idle at all, and it means they'll probably send it tomorrow and I'll end up in here on Saturday because they're dragging arse.

Field Director for a political campaign.

I used to come in at 8:00am and do my workouts when I got off at night but it was pointless so I consolidated some tasks (and shite, I really wasn't doing much from 8 to 9:30 anyway) and now do my workouts in the morning.

I go 6 days a week though and campaigns are a 24/7 business so I'm still working 60+ hours a week

We are still in a training mode. I was beasting the crap out of it and trying to impress my bosses, but they just kept giving me busy work, so I've been trying to pull my coworkers along with me and just turning in work at whatever rate they work at.

Eventually it will become a "stay until you finish your work" flow and then I'll turn on hyperdrive again.

Houston moment of the day:

Houston: "Where do you all want to go eat?"
"How about Chipotle?"
Me: "Sure, I've never been to Chipotle."
Houston: "OMG, what DO they have in NOLA?? I went to Emeril's, but I didn't like it, I don't like Cajun food."

I think people's incorrect usage of the words cajun and creole as synonyms is my biggest cultural pet peeve.

I didn't expect them to really know the difference, I just thought it was funny when this girl was like "OMG YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO CHIPOTLE?!"
