I thought I told you the story the other day, my b. My grandma just moved to nola today and I moved into her apartment today for the interim. I basically took clothes, a tv, a ps3, a bike, a laptop and some books. Its out by Bunker Hill directly across from Memorial City Mall, like 2 minutes from the Katy. I'm just staying here for the time being until I see how things pan out over the next month and a half or whatever. eta: Yes the office is downtown.

1st day tomorrow. Scouted out my route to/from work. I don't have to be there till 9 tomorrow, but I intend to ameliorate the Houston traffic nightmare by just getting there at 7 and leaving when I just simply can't work anymore.
May be late, but good luck buddy.

I'm seeing some inefficiency for one Empire Resources (ticker: ERSO). On phone, but I'd be curious to see if anyone else agrees. Hint: read last ten news items or so.

I'm dead serious here. My commute from uptown (deep uptown) to Metairie (basically lakeview) took longer than it did for me to get to work today. I left late, like 830, thought for sure I was going to be late, and got there at 905 AFTER walking (according to gps) 0.5 miles from my parking spot, since I just took the first/cheapest thing I could find. I used to leave uptown around 840 and get there at 915. Its about 3 miles further, but I'm not barreling through uptown at 20 mph either.
Anyways...the important stuff. Today was the first day. About 8 kids our age (who all share one big room which contains a putting green and a basketball hoop on the wall, among other amenities), every one else is 30+, but every one was incredibly nice. None of the kids have accents, the old guys sound like they're straight off of Dallas, which is funny, but they were all very cool and very friendly. One of the guys was leaving for a new job (IB) so they all went out to eat and I invited me along, so I got some ice-breaking done right away. I am obviously trying to make a good impression, even if I end up elsewhere on my own volition, but I left at 730 (have to wait for boss to review what I did before I push on) and I'm pretty sure 80% of the office was still there. Both

Oh and the work makes me geek out.
ETA: Also made my first Specs visit today and picked up some Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.

Fizz, that's awesome man. What kind of work did they have you doing today? They don't waste any time do they?

Yeah they hired me to work on this one big deal. Filled out paperwork, went to lunch, came back and had a conference with boss, and got to work at about 3. Its IB Real Estate. Right now its more or less financial modelling/data entry, which is really just the first step in the project. Its certainly a big deal with a lot of information, but I wouldn't call it complicated, at least at this point. I don't think you could just walk in and pick it up if you didn't know what cap rats/noi/etc were (cfa) and just general accounting/finance understanding. He said be there by 9, I plan on getting there at 7.

Sounds like it's right up your alley. I'm confident you'll kick arse.

If nothing else, again, its something to put on the resume that's more directly related to what I want to do. Some guy I marginally know got a research analyst job at JRCO with 3 months of internship experience at Chaffe and a Tulane MFIN, I would hope that working at a ChaffeX1000 + the other shite on there would be enough to elicit some kind of real interview.

I would think so, too. You'll land something killer, but I'd probably go for the Houston gig or something similar. I think it lends itself to better opportunities in LA down the road. It seems there's a greater amount of respect in finance in LA for people who first "went away," at least according to literally every single discussion I've had with people currently in the field.
It also puts you on a greater stage nationally.

Totally agree, and I make absolutely no qualms about it. My purpose is to come here, or NYC, effectively build up my own intellectual capital, and then import it back to nola. I know nola people catch flack for this mindset (not without merit), but that is my home and I love it dearly, and I have no intentions of living (for an extended period of time) or dying anywhere but there. I'm just going away for awhile to better myself, and hopefully better my city in the long run.

I was always one of the ones who wanted to stay in LA. I love my state and would like to call it my permanent home again soon some day. But I think we have a lot of people who are interested in importing high finance back into LA as you've said and if we want to compete nationally we need training that is not just trim fit for our local markets.

If you go to specs on Fridays you can get drunk on samples. However, I stopped going to specs as I have no free time to drink these days.

The downside of being an over achiever in an office that doesn't expect you to do so, is that the job becomes very boring once you have created a giant lead on your coworkers.
