Can anyone give any insight on the best way to obtain a job in the public sector (nonprofit or local/state gov't) in Baton Rouge?

In order to meet the standards of the other workers at not for profits and governmental entities, you just need be breath. That's about it.

What type of work are you looking to get into?

Policy analysis, preferably, or nonprofit program management

That's what I'm starting to notice.

When you say policy analyis, do you mean from the political side, such as lobbying or bill writing? Or working in state government like working for a department of something?
Nonprofit - just ask around.

Department of Education, more specifically. I am also interested in working with the Louisiana State Legislature. I'm interested in government in whole being that I have a masters in public administration and working on another degree in public policy.

I would hope that people in the Dept of Education actually have some experience working in Education... the fact that they don't might be a big part of the problem.
Did you do any internships while you were in your MPA program?

Yes, I did an internship, but it was in New Orleans. I'm not from Baton Rouge, so I don't know many people here. All of my education and experience focuses on the policy side of education. I'm also open to working at local university, but that seems almost impossible.

Are you still a student or are you done with school?

Don't take this the wrong way, but your masters program is failing you mightily. Doesn't your university have a career services office? Go there. An internet messageboard isn't the place for pub policy career advice. Start volunteering in your rep or senators local office, volunteer for any remotely topical organizations, and for Pete's sake, network with ppl in real life. "Knowing someone" is a skill, not a birthright.

Thanks for your insight. However, I simply asked a question. If you must know, I often visit and utilize many career service offices and job boards. I network quite often, in both casual and business situations. My masters program offered many opportunities, most being in New Orleans, however, my preference at the moment is to live and work in Baton Rouge. I simply asked for insight because I find that this forum's participants are well-versed in giving meaningful advice, not snarky comments like your's assuming that I'm just being lazy.

I have a semester of coursework to complete, and then I will have about 2 semesters left to complete the dissertation portion of my program. I do work full-time currently and I am also a full-time student, attending classes in the evening.

Thanks for your advice. I have minimal professional experience. I've done a few internships here and there, an assistantship while in grad school, and I currently work full-time. I was just curious about the Baton Rouge public sector. It doesn't seem like much is avaiable in this area.
