the top tier schools are far ahead on extracurriculars and the after school programs are amazing. The top tier for K-8 also have an easier path into the top tier high schools in Houston then top tier colleges.
Sounds like you have your answer. But to address your question, no it wouldn't be irresponsible to spend 12% of your income on k-8 for your kids, assuming it's the right thing for them.

Fair warning though, private schools can yield a spoiled rich kid psyche. As the kids hit middle and high school, you and the mrs will need to be on your toes to avoid that, if it's of concern to you. Also, different kids may fair better in different environs. So it's not necessarily a one-size fits all.

But from what you're saying, it sounds like your choices are limited.

Did you opt for private or public for your kids? A lot of the kids I went to school with in private school ended up being shitheads

Parochial. Exactly for that reason.

But the Catholic system in Charlotte also sounds to be better than the OP's in Houston, both in College placement (Ivies, Duke, they put piles into UNC, Wake, etc) and extracurriculars (state champs in sports, activities, etc).

That said, one of ours had special needs. Parochial wasn't a great fit. Placed him in an expensive set of programs (maybe twice private school costs?) for a few years. By 10th grade he wanted to mainstream. With all options open, he chose to go public, which we supported and it was actually a really good fit.

Looking back, I'm pleased with the decisions we made, and feel fortunate we could afford to make them.

At the income levels you imply this shouldn’t even be a big decision
